Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From the archives: From clay to cardboard with Ann Weber
Q: Can you explain how you moved from functional pottery to large-scale cardboard sculpture?
After graduate school, I was encouraged to explore art beyond functional craft. Kandinsky's abstract forms inspired me to experiment with bigger pieces, leading me away from traditional pottery toward nonfunctional, sculptural work using readily available materials like cardboard.
Stéphanie Devaux: Where ink meets lace
Q: What draws you to the fusion of lace and ink, and how does it affect the viewer's perception of your pieces?
The fusion creates a threshold between reading and seeing, making it unclear whether the material is thread or written text, which invites viewers to engage more deeply and interpret the piece through touch and exploration.
Shelly Goldsmith: Nature, Nurture and the Unravelling Thread
Q: What do you hope viewers take away from your work?
I want to provoke questions about biology, psychology, and our relationship with the planet, inviting a personal, reflective journey that lingers over time.
Shelly Goldsmith: Nature, Nurture and the Unravelling Thread
Q: How do you deal with doubt or difficulty in a long-term project?
Doubt is constant, but the key is to push through by staying connected to the idea and using mentors and peer feedback to stay on track while embracing the unknown.
Nicole Nehrig: the layered power of making
Q: What do you hope readers will take away from your book?
I hope it helps them see the rich sense of meaning and purpose that making can create for them.
