Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Aerotech quick chat: Co-packaged optics & the active alignment breakthrough
Q: From your position, what is driving this burst of interest in co-packaged optics?
The driver is the push to reduce power and increase bandwidth in data-center transceivers by moving photonics closer to ASICs, enabling higher efficiency and better signal quality, with industry catalysts like NVIDIA's announcement accelerating adoption.
The spark for photonics education
Q: What is Spark Alpha and how does it work in the classroom?
Spark Alpha is a project-based program where student teams identify a relevant problem, conceptualize a photonics-based solution, develop a business plan, and ultimately pitch the product. The approach emphasizes hands-on learning, student ownership, and collaboration with local industry and educators, with the goal of making photonics tangible and engaging before diving into deep math or science.
The spark for photonics education
Q: Tell me about the company history and how Spark Photonics came to be.
Spark Photonics originated when research and education collaborators realized a market need for dedicated photonics design services. They spun out two entities: Spark Photonics Design (for-profit) and Spark Photonics Foundation (non-profit), to address both commercial demand and workforce development. The effort was supported by MIT and AIM Photonics as a pathway to scale and broaden access to photonics expertise.
The heart of chemistry
Q: What drew you to photochemistry and this field?
I was attracted by the idea that light can drive entirely opposite outcomes in chemical reactions, which is both fascinating and paradoxical, and I followed that curiosity to develop conceptual tools for understanding these behaviors.
Silicon photonics and beyond
Q: Tell me a little bit more about NLM Photonics and your place here in the industry.
NLM Photonics is a Seattle-based startup focused on high-performance, energy-efficient, scalable electro-optic modulation on silicon photonics, built on a foundation of organic electro-optic materials developed at UW, with a strong emphasis on stability at elevated temperatures and scalable processing.
