  • Layperson here- love it!

I am just an ordinary person- I have almost no understanding of physics and firefighting. Seriously, it’s an embarrassment.

And yet! This podcast is *fascinating*!! It moves at a perfect pace, and the content is made fascinating and accessible by the host.

(Irrelevant aside: I do have a background in research, however, and I am impressed with the host giving credit and praise to the grad students he works with. Wish I had an advisor like him back in the day!)

  • Super content - please add transcripts!

Recently found this useful show with lots of info and experience on fire science. Thank you to show and guests for sharing their knowledge. If possible, please can you add the transcript function to the older episodes? It comes up on the latest one but not early shows. Thanks.

  • Superb

Superb podcast with really good fire science information for the newcomer as well as the expert. I love the well-documented podcasts with many references to scientific articles and reference works. Marvellous soundtrack in episode 100. I would love to save it to my playlist on Apple Music but can’t find it. Please let me know if it is available!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

256 - Modelling turbulent combustion in fire CFD with Bart Merci
Q: How did your pathway from conventional combustion to fire research begin?
Bart explains starting in mechanical engineering and turbulence chemistry, moving from jet flames to buoyant fires, and recognizing that fire dynamics require models that can handle large-scale, unsteady entrainment and buoyancy-driven flow.
254 - Communicating fire science with firefighters, with Steve Kerber
Q: How do you bridge the knowledge gap between researchers and frontline firefighters?
We create advisory boards and fire service technical panels that include a mix of career and volunteer firefighters from diverse geographies, then translate complex science into practical training through videos, props, and instructor guides, always prioritizing relevance and trust.
252 - Substantiating Fire Models with Craig Hofmeister and Bryan Klein
Q: What is the practical use of this guideline when dealing with stakeholders and budgets?
There is a secondary selection layer that considers stakeholder constraints like cost and schedule, ensuring the chosen model balances technical fit with project realities.
252 - Substantiating Fire Models with Craig Hofmeister and Bryan Klein
Q: How does the framework begin and what questions does it target first?
It begins with defining the problem and questions to determine what physics and quantities are needed, which then guides model selection and outputs.
252 - Substantiating Fire Models with Craig Hofmeister and Bryan Klein
Q: Can you tell me a little more about the background and goal of providing such a guidance?
The guidance started to answer how to prove you used a fire model correctly and whether the model is appropriate for the problem, providing a common-sense process to justify model choice.
