  • Layperson here- love it!

I am just an ordinary person- I have almost no understanding of physics and firefighting. Seriously, it’s an embarrassment.

And yet! This podcast is *fascinating*!! It moves at a perfect pace, and the content is made fascinating and accessible by the host.

(Irrelevant aside: I do have a background in research, however, and I am impressed with the host giving credit and praise to the grad students he works with. Wish I had an advisor like him back in the day!)

  • Super content - please add transcripts!

Recently found this useful show with lots of info and experience on fire science. Thank you to show and guests for sharing their knowledge. If possible, please can you add the transcript function to the older episodes? It comes up on the latest one but not early shows. Thanks.

  • Superb

Superb podcast with really good fire science information for the newcomer as well as the expert. I love the well-documented podcasts with many references to scientific articles and reference works. Marvellous soundtrack in episode 100. I would love to save it to my playlist on Apple Music but can’t find it. Please let me know if it is available!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

248 - JRC update on Fire Safety Engineering in Europe with Francesca Sciarretta
Q: What is the JRC and how does it relate to European Commission policy making?
The JRC serves as the science and knowledge provider to EU decision making, conducting independent research to support policies rather than developing standards or codes itself, and collaborating with other DGs, agencies, and external partners.
244 - Decision making in large-scale evacuations with Erica Kuligowski
Q: What are practical implications for emergency communication and shelter planning?
Maps and predictive tools can reduce pre-evacuation delays if trusted and timely, but messages must balance urgency with accuracy to maintain trust; debriefs after events help sustain trust and improve future responses while clarifying what occurred.
244 - Decision making in large-scale evacuations with Erica Kuligowski
Q: What data sources are being used to improve evacuation modeling?
A mix of qualitative interviews, GPS data, social media mining, VR simulations, and traffic and shelter data are used to understand destinations, routes, and crowd dynamics, with an emphasis on integrating multiple data sets to capture 'why' behind the 'where' and 'how'.
244 - Decision making in large-scale evacuations with Erica Kuligowski
Q: How has Erica's PADM model evolved from building fires to large-scale hazards?
The PADM model remains central for understanding evacuation decisions in large-scale hazards, but the research now emphasizes what people do after deciding to evacuate, as well as the broader movement within fire-affected areas and how that affects road networks and shelter planning.
239 - Assessing post-fire structural damage in tunnels with Negar Elhami-Khorasani
Q: What are the factors that influence spalling?
Moisture content, temperature, high-strength vs low-strength concrete, and the stiffness of the concrete all influence the likelihood and severity of spalling.
