  • #87, - A Mixed Bag

Sound level changes and late coming guest (they go ahead without him!) make episode #87 difficult to listen to. But guest De Palma, when he arrives is, insightful, but could have been so much better. Needs a redo/ re-edit.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#646 - Christian Petzold on Barbara
Q: Is there a need to distance or disassociate the film's gaze from the gaze of surveillance of the state?
Pet zold articulates that the film deliberately uses two camera positions to frame the same subject, creating a dynamic where surveillance and self-awareness shape how characters present themselves, while the audience gauges who is looking and who is being looked at.
#643 - Alexandre Koberidze on Dry Leaf
Q: How did you know when to end the shooting and move into editing?
They collected far more material than could be edited; the decision to end came during sorting and editing when it became clear the archive was too large to manage, prompting a careful trimming to preserve the core vision.
#643 - Alexandre Koberidze on Dry Leaf
Q: Tell us how this project started.
The project was a family affair, with brothers directing and a father acting, which set the tone for an intimate, collaborative road movie across Georgia.
#644 - Béla Tarr on Werckmeister Harmonies
Q: What is your philosophy of filmmaking and how do you approach the process on set?
Filmmaking is a pragmatic craft centered on the cast's personalities, the situations you create, and the life around you; there is no fixed script, only the necessary conditions to let spontaneous human behavior emerge.
#642 - Lesley Manville on Midwinter Break
Q: Have you had cases where the character you played on screen differed from your intention, and how did you respond?
She discusses not watching dailies, preferring to see the finished edited product with soundtrack, and notes that while edits can change the flow, she hasn't felt a negative shift in performance due to directing choices.
