  • Such generous information

I’ve taken Lisa’s flower farming course (highly recommend), have bought her books (the Cut Flower Handbook is rarely far from my side) and listen to her podcasts and have always found Lisa to be a reliable, generous and relatable source of information for me as a new flower farmer. Thank you, Lisa, for all you do.

  • LMZ’s advice is invaluable

I have read her books, followed her advice, and by far find her the most helpful in the flower farming world. Her 25+ years of experience and all that she shares are invaluable for a beginner like me. I also love that she’s a concise communicator- she gives clear instructions and doesn’t have all this extra fluff in her books, podcasts, or social media which is great for someone like me who is ADHD and can zone out when I hear or see too many words!

#400: Top 3 Perennials That Pull Their Weight with Dave Dowling (Encore)
Q: What would you say are the top three perennials worth starting a cut-flower operation with?
The top three perennials Dave recommends are peonies for long-term, high-value blooms; Baptisia as a durable, tall filler with multiple selling points (flowers, foliage, seeds); and Sedum Autumn Joy as a reliable, easy-to-grow foliage and flower source with multi-season sales potential.
#394: Bringing Joy Through Flowers - Meet Tricia of The Simple Sunflower (Encore)
Q: What kinds of flowers work best for bouquets and longevity in hospital settings?
Longer stems, durable varieties like zinnias and dahlias that last, plus aromatics like lavender or lemon basil can be especially appreciated, while some patients prefer less fragrance.
#394: Bringing Joy Through Flowers - Meet Tricia of The Simple Sunflower (Encore)
Q: How can someone outside the local area get involved or start a chapter like this?
Reach out via the website to start a chapter or get guidance; the organization provides resources and is willing to help others replicate the model in their communities.
#394: Bringing Joy Through Flowers - Meet Tricia of The Simple Sunflower (Encore)
Q: What does the process look like for collecting and repurposing flowers before they reach patients?
Donors can have volunteers pick up flowers or bring them to the hospital, where they are sorted, trimmed, and placed into repurposed vases; then hospital volunteers deliver them to patients the next day.
#378: Dave Dowling on "Ask A Flower Farmer"
Q: Is it worth overwintering snapdragons in zone 5 Estonia?
Zone 5 is quite cold; it's better to plant new snapdragons in the spring because overwintered ones may have smaller stems.
