Listening to this has been transformative and do moving and I learned a ton. Such an incredible, well rounded and thoughtfully structured audio documentary. You can tell it was made with real curiosity, care for the people in it, love for the music, and respect and passion for the history and struggles. This is a well- balanced portrait of the legend Fela Kuti and also of the real man he was, also a portrait of a peoples, a country, and a musical legacy. I really appreciated the skillful weaving... more
A really great podcast and if you’re only gonna listen to one episode, make it the one about Fela’s mother (Vagina) - As someone who saw Fela several times I only had one quibble. In an early episode describing the structure of his music the track they used was Army Arrangement, not Fela’s version but the sanitized version Bill Laswell arranged and released while Fela was in jail using his vocal track and Bernie Worrell on keys. Fela hated it and released the same song & album with his own arran... more
As a lifelong Fela Kuti fan, this was a very welcome surprise. There could have been more in-depth analysis of the music. The themes of colonial and post-colonial history are featured prominently, but exclusively through a dated “2020” lens.
Fela Kuti: Fear No Man is the best podcast I’ve heard in 2025. I was familiar with Fela and Seun’s music but didn’t know about Fela’s amazing mom and his origin story. High quality pod. I binged it all over a day and a half, without any napping.
I have been a Fela Kuti fan for 30 years. In CD times I bought all cds I could get hold of. He was like a profit of music for me, but I did not know many of these stories here. I dare to say that this is my favourite podcast serious that I have ever listened to. Amazing production the music edit is beautiful and the content is meaningful and holds ideas for how to deal with authoritarism today. Thank you Jad and your wonderful team.
