I played all the fighting fantasy books as a kid - this is a wonderful trip down memory lane. The narrative is read at a good pace, with a smattering of dead pan wit, concluding with an excellent summary of the relative merits of the book. Recommend to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy adventure.
This is such a fun podcast for anyone that is a fan of interactive fiction, or grew up reading, choose your own adventure, or has a history with fighting fantasy books. I’ve listened to a few podcasts like this, but the host is the reason this one really works. He has a good reading voice, a fun personality and offers good critiques at the end of each episode on the book that he read. Highly recommended!!
Must listen for any game book fans.
H J Doom plays through the Fighting Fantasy books with a wonderfully dry sense of humour and ends each play through with insightful and well expressed analysis of the book. The bonus episodes are a treat too - I highly recommend this podcast for gamebook fans.
A great gamebook podcast. There are a lot of podcasts about Fighting Fantasy books, but HJ Doom offers more in the form of an analysis and also of bonus podcasts from gamebooks not in the Fighting Fantasy series. Highly recommended!

The show centers on a single host who plays through Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, mixing live playthrough narration with thoughtful design critique, historical context, and meta-commentary. Episodes regularly analyze mechanics, pacing, and structure across classic and modern gamebooks, with bonus episodes exploring adjacent formats like digital adaptations and Conan/other franchises. The host's dry humor, thorough research, and willingness to critique balance accessibility with deep-dive analysis make it engaging for nostalgia-driven fans and readers who enjoy game design critique. A notable through-line is creator-owned production (often billed through a dedicated imprint) and Patreon-supported content that expands beyond core playthroughs. more
