原來，18世紀甫成形的書店，本業是印刷廠，最有名的老闆是開國元勳富蘭克林；19世紀開始有了「逛書店」這回事，瀏覽導致逗留，逗留促成對話；20世紀初，規模最大的書店是百貨公司的圖書部門，連大象都能搬進去；而大型連鎖書店和獨立書店曾經互相對立，如今它們共同的敵人是電商巨獸⋯。
