  • Binge it!

I am flying through this show. Some episodes are better than others but every one has a nugget of new insight. She is honest and forthright. That style is needed more often these days.

  • Jane Perez is so Biased it’s Laughable

When Jane interviewed Da Wei you could tell she was dying for him to trash Trump for gutting Voice of America and Radio Free Asia, and for shutting down USAID. She was so disappointed when he didn’t. She then tried to get Rana to agree with her, but he actually sided with Da Wei. Hahaha! Jane is what a journalist shouldn’t be. Also when she interviewed Jake Sullivan, a man who radiated nothing but small d!ck energy every time he met with his Chinese counterparts, Jane lobbed nothing but softball... more

  • Highly recommend the FaceOff podcast

Thanks to Jane Perlez and the FaceOff team for season three of this podcast.

Already some great insights into developments and potential directions in the US/China space, a space that is currently more dynamic than in any other time.

The impact of ‘Garbage Time’ (Season 3 Episode 1) will be something to watch and takes me back to a piece of work done by the Royal Dutch Shell Operations Research team in the 1980s.

Zhou Bo (Season 3 Episode 2) as always is a useful voice for providing clarit... more

  • Useful

This is an interesting podcast for those interested in China and especially its relationship with the USA. The presenter regularly makes clear her low opinion of Donald J Trump, sometimes it is superfluous. Even Biden/Clinton adviser Jake Sullivan seems to take a more nuanced view. Given the presenter is supposed to be a journalistic expert voice on China she regularly appears amazed to learn new things about it from Rana Mitter. The guests make the show worthwhile.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Charm Offensive That Isn't
Q: How will China capitalize on this soft power vacuum that Trump has created?
Da Wei suggests that while China might see the situation as an opportunity, there are significant challenges and economic constraints that limit its capability to truly capitalize on it.
The Xi Factor
Q: What would the world look like with China in the lead as the number one superpower?
Sullivan outlines concerns around China's economic dominance, free speech restrictions globally, and the precarious future of Taiwan under Chinese leadership.
The Xi Factor
Q: What is Xi Jinping like up close, in the room, across the table?
Sullivan describes Xi as imposing yet relaxed, capable of dynamic conversation across various tones, and adept at serious discussions without showing disdain for the U.S.
China's Arms Race
Q: Do you worry that the world is entering a new arms race?
In the nuclear field, I do not worry about that because escalating arsenals would be a very imprudent move by the United States.
China's Arms Race
Q: What does the primary purpose of the parade you mentioned in the episode highlight about China's intentions?
The parade serves multiple purposes: showcasing military strength and demonstrating transparency in China's military capabilities to counter Western criticism.
