  • Excellent. Please don’t change a thing

This is an excellent podcast for those interested in evolutionary psychology who are not professionals in the field. The presenters do not patronize their audience but it is easy to find the references for those interested. In conversation with their guests, they offer insights into thinking in the field beyond that you can easily get from just reading papers and the popular trade books. Thankfully the listener is spared political discussion and amateurish comedy. I wish there were more podcasts... more

The Origins of evolutionary psychology with Martin Daly
Q: What were the major challenges in marrying psychology with evolutionary theory?
He notes tensions around innateness, cognitive models, and the fear among some anthropologists and psychologists that evolutionary explanations would overlook cultural complexity, which gradually eased as journals and conferences began embracing evolution-informed perspectives.
Music and Acoustics with Greg Bryant
Q: What is the relationship between pitch, loudness, distortion, and strength or size in signaling?
The discussion highlights that loudness and distortion can indicate arousal and physical strength, while pitch relates to size in complex ways; formant dispersion and vocal tract shape contribute to perceived body size and strength, with stronger voices often being louder and lower, but pitch strength relationships are debated.
Music and Acoustics with Greg Bryant
Q: Does acoustics have its own science, and is it large within psychology?
Greg suggests that acoustics is a distinct and important subfield within perceptual psychology, though it is smaller than vision and has a strong hardware/measurement component that historically made it challenging; with modern software, more researchers can engage with psychophysics of sound.
Moralizing Self-Control with Léo Fitouchi
Q: What are you working on now? Or what do you plan to work on in the next little bit?
I'm trying to finish this punishment stuff, but the next idea I'm more interested in is the moral psychology of authority.
Culture, Killing, and PTSD with Sarah Mathew
Q: Can you tell us about the moral landscape that impacts the Turkana's view on violence?
The moral landscape shapes their norms around warfare, which influences their responses to combat-related PTSD and how they handle the psychological impacts of violence.
