  • If you love softball, listen here...

Most reliable and informative softball podcast anywhere. Coach Don and Tory are pros in this game and they leave no stones unturned. Whether you are new or experienced to the game they are great at explaining every concept they talk about that is both thoughtful and insightful in a way that is understandable to anyone listening. A lot of informational podcast come off as too technical and is boring. Everything fastpitch is done well and is entertaining to listen to while you learn. They also con... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Challenge to be a multi-sport athlete / Interview with Bill Hoopes, a dynamic leader, accomplished educator, and seasoned coach / Balance Reps with Instruction
Q: What are your thoughts on the travel ball versus high school dynamic, and how they can work together for player development?
Bill argues that travel ball and high school serve different but complementary roles; travel ball offers more control and customization, while high school emphasizes daily relationships, team culture, and consistent development. The goal is to leverage both environments to maximize growth and college opportunities, not to treat them as mutually exclusive.
Help with players ignoring instructions / Interview about recruiting and a new app / Body Language
Q: Can you explain what APS is and how it helps student-athletes take ownership of their recruiting journey?
APS is a resource platform that simplifies and organizes the recruiting process for student-athletes. It helps athletes own their journey by centralizing coaching contacts, streamlining email communication from their own Gmail, providing school and major filters, offering templates, and delivering engagement analytics so they can focus on playing while staying proactive.
Approaching an umpire / Changes in women's athletics / Crack or scratched bats / Practice communication
Q: When requesting clarification from an umpire on a call during a game, what is the most appropriate way to open that conversation?
The hosts recommend staying calm and diplomatic, asking about the rule or interpretation, and considering whether the other umpire may have a better view, rather than accusing or attacking the umpire, to increase the likelihood of a productive discussion and correct call.
Opinions from other podcasters / Time-Limit games and wasted time / Coaches self-evaluation tool
Q: What is the value of the coach self-evaluation tool, and how should coaches use it?
The hosts argue that regular self-evaluation helps coaches acknowledge weaknesses, set personal development goals, and improve communication and relationships with players and families. They suggest using a structured five-point scale across key coaching domains and potentially expanding to evaluate assistants and players over time.
Opinions from other podcasters / Time-Limit games and wasted time / Coaches self-evaluation tool
Q: What is the current state of the fast pitch parent and their role in developing a player, and what could they do better?
The guests discuss that parents come in a wide range of attitudes, from highly supportive and engaged to overly fanatical. They emphasize supporting their child's development, encouraging multi-sport participation, avoiding overemphasis on college scholarships, and focusing on balanced, long-term growth rather than pressuring for exposure or excessive travel.
