Most reliable and informative softball podcast anywhere. Coach Don and Tory are pros in this game and they leave no stones unturned. Whether you are new or experienced to the game they are great at explaining every concept they talk about that is both thoughtful and insightful in a way that is understandable to anyone listening. A lot of informational podcast come off as too technical and is boring. Everything fastpitch is done well and is entertaining to listen to while you learn. They also con... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

AUSL Growth / Strike Zone Concerns / Defensive Development with Morgan Stuart
Q: How do you balance hitting and defense at a high level, and why is defense so important?
Defense is the foundation; teams need to allocate significant practice time to defense (at least 30%), because a great defensive team can win games by preventing runs and creating outs. The experts emphasize the process over stats and encourage players to be a complete, leadership-driven, well-rounded teammate.
Interview with female athlete Confidence Coach Bre Smedley / Keep Practices Fresh
Q: What would you say to coaches who are hesitant to introduce mental skills training because they think it takes too much time or isn't essential?
Bre argues that mental training can be integrated without adding significant practice time, and that the benefits—improved focus, reduced errors under pressure, and stronger team culture—make it worth including even for busy schedules.
Interview with female athlete Confidence Coach Bre Smedley / Keep Practices Fresh
Q: How does your 3-2-1 Brave routine actually work in daily practice, and what impact have you seen from it?
3-2-1 Brave is a five-minute anchor routine that includes three affirmations, two minutes of journaling, and a three-minute visualization. It helps players reframe noise, find evidence of improvement, and reset before games or practices, which leads to better focus and performance under pressure.
Interview with female athlete Confidence Coach Bre Smedley / Keep Practices Fresh
Q: Could you give us a little insight into the model you're using that allows you to work on mental skills while incorporating them into existing practice?
The plug-and-play curriculum fits into a single weekly slot, with 15 minutes dedicated to one concept, followed by a coach-led or captain-led discussion. Students practice a routine like the snapback and gradually learn new skills such as self-talk, with ongoing reinforcement and team bonding.
Home Field Advantage / Interview with Chip Pugh / Practice Attendance and Playing Time / Coaching Gadgets
Q: What motivated you to write the book Made to Win, and how does it relate to your coaching and leadership work?
Chip explains that the book grew from his belief that leaders develop people beyond the field, sharing six core practices and aiming to help others maximize their potential by focusing on identity, purpose, and serving others, with an approachable, non-preachy tone.
