My daughter plopped a no contact on us Feb of 2024. We have learned so much about this in the last two years. I miss her two kids with a deep penetrating pain that cuts new everyday. Her narcissistic characteristics made it possible. I worry for her kids. But to make this time even worse our son’s wife has joined forces and left with her two kids now keeping them from her husband my son forcing him to go thru the courts to get his kids back! She also has many narcissistic traits and... more

  • Not the way to do it

I can’t imagine being this woman’s son and listening to her tell complete strangers all about his relationship with her. Nothing happens in a vacuum. I agree with a different reviewer who stated that there are two sides to every story. This woman is extremely self-focused. I have grown children and they don’t owe me anything. They choose to be around me because the foundation was built.

  • Thank you

This is a really hard subject for me, and I believe God put this podcast in my life.. I’ve only listened to two episodes and it has given me hope… I knew this all along, and everybody told me to be quiet, but I know my child better than any therapist…

  • Yikes!!!!

    Yikes. No thank you.

After listening, my impression is that this podcast comes from a place of entitlement rather than self-reflection. It feels like the host believes parents are owed a relationship with their adult children simply because they’re the parent, instead of recognizing that healthy relationships require mutual respect, accountability, and trust.

Rather than encouraging parents to honestly examine their own role in an estrangement, the podcast seems to create an echo chamber where... more

Can Family Estrangement Be Repaired? Therapist Roberta Wasserman Explains
Q: What makes reconciliation possible, and what has to be true for it to be healthy rather than everyone pretending nothing happened?
Reconciliation is possible when the estranged party is open to listening without defensiveness, when there is emotional safety, and when the hurt can be acknowledged. It requires ongoing work and may not be achievable in every case; the goal is to be ready for reconciliation, not to force it.
Can Family Estrangement Be Repaired? Therapist Roberta Wasserman Explains
Q: Roberta, before we get into solutions, how do you define family estrangement, and how is that different from parental alienation or grandparent alienation?
Family estrangement involves an adult choosing to limit or cut off contact with another family member; parental or grandparent alienation is when one parent steers a child away, often during or after a divorce. Estrangement centers on the adult's choice, whereas alienation involves influencing a child to reject a parent.
Why Family Estrangement Is Exploding | Kat Johnston Explains the Perfect Storm
Q: How can a parent tell if no contact is for protection or punishment?
Kat outlines three categories: protection with real risk, and two categories where punishment or instrumental use (like financial help or babysitting) is driving the separation; recognizing the motive helps determine whether to push for dialogue or step back.
Why Family Estrangement Is Exploding | Kat Johnston Explains the Perfect Storm
Q: Why has family estrangement become such a hot-button issue recently?
Multiple factors converge into a perfect storm: shifting parenting styles from Gen X, the pervasive role of social media, and the growing use—and misapplication—of therapy language, all reducing tolerance and escalating no-contact dynamics.
When Is No Contact Actually Necessary? Peter Anderson Answers the Hard Questions
Q: What does healthy accountability look like in estrangement?
It involves concrete, specific expectations, open dialogue, and mutual respect, rather than vague accusations, with a focus on the child's needs and keeping pathways for repair.
