  • I love this podcast!!

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to review this podcast because it is my absolute favorite and brings me so much joy and knowledge! The content is so interesting and funny and I also just love the dynamic of the whole team. I have gotten so many book/tv/music recommendations from them that I can’t even remember what was recommended by my real life friends versus my podcast friends. Paying for the Patreon is also so worth it! I’m a history teacher and I dream to one day figure out how to in... more

  • Rock on!

Listening to Material Girls is like getting a burnt CD in 2004 from your cool friend. There’s some bangers that you recognize (Foucault! Said! Butler!) but it’s mostly obscure B-sides and indie artists that blow your mind.

  • Teaching Fuel

I followed Hannah over from a different podcast I listen to and now I like this one even more! Hannah and Marcelle are so smart and funny and have (unfortunately?) inspired me with so many topics I want to bring into my gender and adaptation literature courses now! They perfectly blend theory with the objects and media I know my students are interacting with every day, and I have learned so much from them.

P.S. Even though I’ve looked them both up, I can’t stop picturing Hannah as Sue Perkins (w... more

  • Correct about rhododendrons

Listening to this podcast is one of my favorite parts of the week. I love considering aspects of culture from the lens they bring and having the opportunity to learn more about theory. I often talk about the episodes as the conversations linger in my brain. I even brought some into a sw graduate class I had the opportunity to teach which was a fun conversation. One of my favorite episodes is Hamilton x Hagiography but I appreciate them all. Also deeply appreciate the commitment to the truth as s... more

  • Heated Rivalry & Hunger Games eps

I love this show, and am always so down for whatever critical theory thing is going on, but I never would have watched Heated Rivalry if not for this episode. It was, for me, the perfect framing for the show and maybe the books later on. Similarly, the Hunger Games episode was one of my favorite (is that the right word?) deep dives on all of the things we are looking at (and watching) right now. Just such super solid work. Thanks for having these conversations.

Q: Do you have stats on how many listeners were tuning in without having watched the show?
The hosts acknowledge that a very large portion of listeners may not have watched the show, celebrating the phenomenon as a different, valid way to engage with the material and noting it as a sign of the podcast's reach.
The Vampire Podcast: Audience Q&A
Q: Do we get much of Daniel from his own point of view, or is he always mediated by others?
Daniel's perspective is largely mediated, especially after he becomes a vampire and falls under Armand's sway; the episode considers opening and closing scenes where Daniel shows glimpses of an unmediated self, but most of his narration remains filtered through others.
The Vampire Podcast: Audience Q&A
Q: Why didn't the show update Lestat's music genre—wouldn't a modern genre better fit the character?
They discuss Lestat's arc as a long-running, multi-era performer, noting a shift toward pop in the narrative and imagining contemporary influences like Euro-pop, Rosalia-inspired multi-genre approaches, and the possibility of a Eurovision-style spectacle.
The Vampire Podcast: Audience Q&A
Q: What are your thoughts on the why of it all, with respect to Gabriella bringing Lestat to the witch burnings?
The hosts propose that Gabriella's aim could be to isolate and control Lestat, using the burning as both a warning and a grooming mechanism, with circumstantial evidence suggesting she orchestrated or heavily influenced events to shape his and her own version of freedom.
The Vampire Podcast | Introduction
Q: We spent the entire first season watching Lestat emotionally and psychologically abuse Louis and Claudia. How are we supposed to reconcile the first season with the reveal that Lestat didn't ultimately try to kill Louis?
The hosts suggest that the reveal invites rereading the first season with an understanding of Lestat's complexity and harmful behavior, recognizing that abuse was real while still acknowledging more nuance in his motivations and the ongoing dynamics of power and affection.
