Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Art & Healthcare with Janani Balasubramanian & Karleen Giannitrapani
Q: What makes collaboration challenging across disciplines, and how do you address that friction?
Friction is inherent and productive in cross-cultural work; success comes from strategies like playful engagement, translation of jargon, and viewing conflict as a driver of innovation rather than a barrier.
Art & Healthcare with Janani Balasubramanian & Karleen Giannitrapani
Q: How do you translate artistic work into clinical settings without losing its essence?
By co-designing interventions from the start, co-locating practitioners from diverse fields, and building intentional 'containers' for conversation that lead to scalable pilots rather than isolated artworks.
Art & Healthcare with Janani Balasubramanian & Karleen Giannitrapani
Q: What is Forever Lab trying to accomplish in healthcare and caregiving across the lifespan?
Forever Lab seeks to integrate artists, scientists, and clinicians to co-create interventions that support caregiving across life stages, translating artistic inquiry into practical, bedside-friendly forms that enhance well-being and prepare people for transitions like birth and death.
Art & Trees with Char McCurdy & Aaron Straight
Q: What is the class actually going to look like?
The class is autonomous in many ways but constrained by real, natural materials; students will work with a tree felled on campus, navigate timber processing like kiln-drying, and build projects that emerge from hands-on exploration rather than a fixed syllabus.
Art & Fellowship with Erika Chong Shuch & Tiffany Steinwert
Q: Erika, can you start by talking a little bit about your background in the performing arts and how this project is both an extension of that work, as well as a new direction in your practice?
Erika describes a long history of interdisciplinary, collaborative performance and social practice, explaining how 1,000 Ways to Hold evolved from earlier projects that focused on intimate gatherings and gifting time to strangers, while threading together performance, community, and ceramics as an experimental extension.
