Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Art & Fellowship with Erika Chong Shuch & Tiffany Steinwert
Q: Erika, can you start by talking a little bit about your background in the performing arts and how this project is both an extension of that work, as well as a new direction in your practice?
Erika describes a long history of interdisciplinary, collaborative performance and social practice, explaining how 1,000 Ways to Hold evolved from earlier projects that focused on intimate gatherings and gifting time to strangers, while threading together performance, community, and ceramics as an experimental extension.
Art & Plankton with Jiabao Li & Manu Prakash
Q: Jiabao, how do you go about approaching data and translating it to visual, audio, musical formats?
We create a storyline that goes across scale, involving a plankton instrument to trigger the fall of different plankton and gamifying the experience for the audience.
Art & Oceanography with Mehr Kumar & Mark Baugh-Sasaki
Q: What impact did you hope the work would have?
The hope is that the art inspires people to care more about the issue and ignites imagination in how we think about climate futures.
Art & Oceanography with Mehr Kumar & Mark Baugh-Sasaki
Q: Why was he a good fit to collaborate on this project?
Mark was a good fit due to his shared interests in art and science and their ability to understand each other's perspectives.
Art & Oceanography with Mehr Kumar & Mark Baugh-Sasaki
Q: Can you tell us more about that work? And what have you been focusing on?
The project focuses on understanding historical ecosystems in the Southern Ocean and the impact of human activities.
