  • Good stuff on memoir!

Just listened to an episode about writing memoir, which is what I’ve been doing for the last seven years (and it’s but a slice of life!). I find it’s extremely challenging to do it well and make it work for readers. I appreciated the thoughtful and honest insights offered here, while blowing a few concepts.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

379. How to Approach Agents and Mentors, with Mary Demuth
Q: What should someone look for when choosing an agent?
Look for agents who handle similar genres, fast and high-touch communication, and alignment with the author's goals and voice; also verify standard commission rates and a track record of responsiveness.
375. The Only Thing to Fear Is a Blank Page . . . with Ginny Kubitz Moyer
Q: What role does feedback play in your process, especially early on?
Early readers and an agent's notes helped shape revisions, but she cautions choosing kind, skilled editors who can be honest without crushing the writer's spirit.
375. The Only Thing to Fear Is a Blank Page . . . with Ginny Kubitz Moyer
Q: Did you have to face any of your own fears before you started writing?
Yes, she describes fear as uncertainty about plotting and the worry that her work wouldn't be loved, which gradually eased as she began writing and learned discovery writing as a viable approach.
375. The Only Thing to Fear Is a Blank Page . . . with Ginny Kubitz Moyer
Q: So how do we find the courage to push these fears aside and start writing?
The guest emphasizes that embracing uncertainty and treating initial drafts as malleable—plus practical steps like starting with short scenes, writing by hand to reduce perfectionism, and gradually seeking feedback after a solid draft—can help overcome fear.
373. The Future is Now: How Technology is Outpacing Fiction, with Lee Schneider
Q: What final advice do you give authors who see real-world advancements outpace their fictional timelines?
Write from the heart and trust the timeless nature of good storytelling. If your world feels real to you and your characters, the narrative will resonate even if specific technologies evolve differently than imagined.
