  • Good stuff on memoir!

Just listened to an episode about writing memoir, which is what I’ve been doing for the last seven years (and it’s but a slice of life!). I find it’s extremely challenging to do it well and make it work for readers. I appreciated the thoughtful and honest insights offered here, while blowing a few concepts.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

373. The Future is Now: How Technology is Outpacing Fiction, with Lee Schneider
Q: What final advice do you give authors who see real-world advancements outpace their fictional timelines?
Write from the heart and trust the timeless nature of good storytelling. If your world feels real to you and your characters, the narrative will resonate even if specific technologies evolve differently than imagined.
373. The Future is Now: How Technology is Outpacing Fiction, with Lee Schneider
Q: Do you think all authors writing speculative tech need to stay up to date with real-world advancements?
Yes, because it adds authenticity and can spark new ideas, but you don't want to be bound by it; the goal is to serve the story and the characters while remaining plausible, not to chase every new gadget.
373. The Future is Now: How Technology is Outpacing Fiction, with Lee Schneider
Q: So how do you approach inventing technology for your future-based stories?
I start from the world around us and the tech we barely understand, then research deeply to give those ideas integrity. I balance realism with story needs, letting the characters drive what is explained and what is left mysterious to keep the narrative engaging.
361. Division and Unity, with Chip Webster
Q: What advice would you give to other authors who want to write something that will inspire, motivate, and also thoughtfully educate their readers?
Start writing, have the courage to put it out there, and focus on your important message.
361. Division and Unity, with Chip Webster
Q: How do you build trust with your reader or with your potential reader audience?
By being honest, accessible, and vulnerable in your writing.
