  • Eh

Started with the 5E Heartbreakers episode and it was full of criticism of other people’s work that could all be applied to this podcast.

  • Enjoyed but slightly gatekeepy and hypocritical

I think these guys are very informed and resourceful - they clearly know a lot about DMing and they have a lot of relevant advice. However, I think, despite their professed attitude of inclusion to DMing in general, they ultimately come across aloof and snobbish when critiquing the DMing of others. It’s a useful resource for those who want to understand more about DMing, but they sometimes come across bitter when discussing DnD that’s in the mainstream.

  • Wait I listened to be asked to pay

Listened in…. Thought it’s ok…. Then it shut down and asked for a cash outlay to listen to more…

Get over yourselves, your not that good.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

393 - Ride or Die with John Harper
Q: What are the core mechanics that drive the narration in Ride or Die?
The game uses a single dice pool, where players roll together, and the highest roll determines initiative. Narration then proceeds from lowest to highest, with players describing their actions and the boost and traits shaping outcomes, ending with a final cherry by the top roller.
393 - Ride or Die with John Harper
Q: How does Ride or Die relate to your earlier games like Agon and Paragon?
Ride or Die borrows the idea of archetypes and narrative control from Agon, but simplifies for one-shot play and GM-friendly sessions. It uses a drive-based mechanic instead of pathos and keeps character creation flexible with profiles, rides, and traits, while allowing modular movie-like storytelling.
393 - Ride or Die with John Harper
Q: Can you tell us in brief what Ride or Die is about and what its vibe is?
Ride or Die merges a Fast & Furious vibe with a mythic, action-forward RPG structure. It emphasizes family, ensemble crews, and stunt-filled set pieces, framed by a one-roll resolution system that keeps scenes cinematic and fast-paced.
386 - Dueling DM Fops
Q: What strategies do you have to avoid calling a game if you don't feel like it's working?
Consider diversifying your games or taking breaks to recharge and keep sessions enjoyable.
386 - Dueling DM Fops
Q: How would you go about getting player buy-in to a fictional god or gods?
Start small by giving each player personal connections to a few gods to encourage buy-in without overwhelming them with lore.
