  • The Pitt Explained

I just listened to episode 1 of The Pitt. It was excellent! This podcast is a brilliant way to help us better understand what’s going on medically throughout the series. Seems like making this show would be a lot of work for you both, but it’s much appreciated by this RN 😊

  • Just Ignore the Boring People Comments.

I have a background in the medical field, I think it’s great fun that you can take these involved, often dry medical topics and still include humor and banter. This is educational and entertaining. For the folks that can’t take a joke, and would like to cut the banter, there are plenty of dry textbooks that would thrill you to pieces. I will continue to enjoy this podcast. History, science and humor. You guys are great, keep up the good work!

  • For the Data-Driven and Curious

These hosts are exceptional. I’m simply a health-conscious autodidact and technologist by trade - no exams to pass and no formal medical training required. I listen for the depth of science.

I probably grasp about 70% of the material, but even that provides meaningful insight into my own health. This isn’t medical advice - it’s medical education.

The content is academically precise yet approachable and comprehensive. The interaction between Dr. Mike and Dr. Matt feels genuine and conversationa... more

Q&A #13 | Viruses Hijacking Glycolysis, Menopause & Hot Flashes, and Insulin Resistance
Q: Catherine asked about vasomotor symptoms during menopause and the role of KNDY neurons in the arcuate nucleus.
KNDY neurons produce kisspeptin, neurokinin B, and dynorphin, modulating pulsatile GnRH release; reduced estrogen during menopause removes inhibitory feedback, leading to hyperactivity of these neurons and triggering thermoregulatory responses causing hot flashes.
Q&A #13 | Viruses Hijacking Glycolysis, Menopause & Hot Flashes, and Insulin Resistance
Q: From Joseph in England, what does it mean that viruses hijack glycolysis, and which viruses do this?
Viruses can stimulate host glycolysis to provide energy and biosynthetic precursors for viral replication; examples include human cytomegalovirus, Influenza A, SARS-CoV-2, and Dengue virus, which activate pathways to favor an anabolic metabolic state.
Q&A #13 | Viruses Hijacking Glycolysis, Menopause & Hot Flashes, and Insulin Resistance
Q: Chelsea asked, how does insulin resistance work, and what are the broad roles of insulin in the body?
Insulin promotes glucose uptake in muscle and fat, suppresses hepatic glucose output, supports glycogen synthesis, and promotes lipogenesis while suppressing lipolysis; when resistance develops, tissues respond less, leading to higher blood glucose, increased gluconeogenesis, and more fatty acids in circulation.
Q&A #12 | DOMS, bone growth, how Dr Matt & Dr Mike met, and more...
Q: Can you summarize the origin and forms of the Black Death in a concise way?
The Black Death emerged in the 14th century Europe as a plague caused by Yersinia pestis transmitted via fleas on rats, presenting in bubonic, pneumonic, and septicemic forms, profoundly shaping populations and public health understanding for centuries.
Q&A #12 | DOMS, bone growth, how Dr Matt & Dr Mike met, and more...
Q: How did you two meet and decide to work together?
A long, diary-backed recount shows initial professional friction giving way to collaboration based on complementary strengths and shared ethics, followed by a mutual progression into academia and education, with continued debate and respect that kept them working together for years.
