E1498 - The Hidden Cost of Labels and What Kids Really Need Instead [with Sami Timimi].

Dr. Sami Timimi offers a vital and brave critique of the 'industrialisation' of child mental health, warning parents against the urge to hunt for deficits and labels. However, the impact of his message is completely derailed by the inclusion of advertisements for Early Start Australia. It is jarring to hear a guest explain why early medicalisation can be harmful, only to have the host pause the conversation t... more

  • The world is not mad about ADHD diagnosis’…

Just because you are a doctor and have six children, it doesn’t mean that you know everything about parenting. ADHD is a real, lifelong disability. And the reason that so many accomplished & high functioning people are seeking referrals and help later in life is because they have been suffering for decades- real suffering!! And yes these are fit, healthy people with proper diets. Medication is not the only solution, it’s one option in a toolkit. Medications for conditions like ADHD or depression... more

  • Every Episode

I have listened to the podcast from the beginning and don’t

think I have missed an episode. The Coulsons are brilliant parenting role models, with sensible science-backed advice paired with vulnerability and real life experiences and discussions. Keeping the episodes short means you can listen each day without being overwhelmed trying to fit in lengthy discussions. Hugely relatable and I love the focus on reducing screen time.

  • Roblox

Thank you for reminding me that saying no is okay, As a mum of a 14 year old without a mobile phone and an 11 year old not on Roblox, I am reminded at times that I’m the “world’s worst mum”. But listening to your podcast over the years, and having had the joy of meeting you in person, Justin has given me the strength to remember why I say no. Some days the battles are hard, and I don’t feel like the ally my kids want but I will always stand strong as the mum they NEED!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Energy Game: Stop Running on Empty! [with Amantha Imber]
Q: Amantha, how's your energy today?
Her energy is good and the discussion pivots to how energy work helped her recover from burnout and shape The Energy Game.
When Your Child is Left Out [a listener Q&A]
Q: Dr Justin, we need your help. We've got two boys, five and a half and four. We live in a townhouse complex where there's other families with kids, ranging from four to 12 years old. The kids have all been playing together in the driveway for the past couple of years, with no real problem. But recently, something's changed. The other kids have started being downright mean and rude to our boys. They're told to come inside if they're mean, but they want to be involved and included. What should we do?
The hosts suggest empowering the children to participate in solving the issue, rather than imposing adult-made rules. They emphasize making the environment more inclusive by planning cooperative activities that involve all kids, actively engaging with other families, and fostering a sense of belonging. They propose practical steps like arranging driveway games that require everyone's participation and hosting simple, low-effort social gatherings to model inclusive behavior, while ensuring parents stay present and supportive without dictating every choice.
The Content That's Stealing Kids' Empathy [A Listener Q&A ]
Q: How should I talk to my 12-year-old daughter about upsetting content she's seen online and discourage sharing it?
The hosts suggest starting with questions about why the content was sent, who benefits from sharing it, and whether your child wants to be part of that dynamic. They emphasize teaching moral disengagement concepts, promoting empathy, and making a clear plan to not share but to report harmful material. They also advise being proactive, linking discussions to broader safety and legal considerations, and modeling respectful online behavior.
Listener Q&A — Suicide at Child's High School
Q: What should a parent say to their child when a schoolmate dies by suicide and rumors spread online?
Start with questions, listen actively, correct rumors gently, and ask directly about any thoughts of suicide, staying calm and offering support and professional resources as needed.
Stop Performing and Start Parenting [with Christian O'Connell]
Q: Can you share a memorable line about storytelling and connecting with others?
Storytelling lights up brains and connects people more effectively than mere data, making storytelling a fundamental parenting tool.
