  • Love the show. Wish there was a different host.

Matthew Carey has such a strange and distracting manner of speaking I can’t help but think that this show would be better off without him.

  • Memories of Love Returned

I’m a huge fan of this podcast and rave about it to my colleagues all the time. This week’s episode particularly sounded fascinating. I’ve added Memories of Love Returned to my Letterboxd watchlist, hoping to see it soon here in Vancouver, BC. And I, too, have been trying to pitch this show for an interview. That would be my dream, too. 😉

Have a great time off. Katja DB

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

‘Time And Water’ Director Sara Dosa
Q: How did you go from notionally being moved about something to creating something that then moves all of us?
Sara explains that the idea began with a provocative Guardian article and grew through exploring personal connections, archival material, and a desire to fuse time and memory with the Icelandic landscape, using an archive-led approach and careful pacing to keep the audience engaged.
'Ocean With David Attenborough'
Q: What makes Ocean With David Attenborough feel different from other natural history documentaries?
The film blends three distinct sections—new discoveries, a stark portrayal of threats like overfishing and bottom trawling, and a powerful, hopeful conservation message—while leveraging Attenborough's narration to keep the focus on the ocean rather than on any single presenter.
'Public Access' Director David Shadrack Smith
Q: How did you approach the archival material to maintain coherence?
We built a filter system based on whether the archive existed, whether someone could talk about it, and whether it moved the story forward, aiming to preserve the through-line of open self-expression versus its real-world challenges.
'Public Access' Director David Shadrack Smith
Q: What drew you to tell the story of Public Access now?
I was drawn to it as a time capsule that reveals a radical openness and a belief in everyday people having a voice; it also shows how institutions and markets push back against that openness, which feels relevant today.
Directors Of Oscar Nominee 'Cutting Through Rocks'
Q: How did you develop the film's aesthetic considering the documentary's content?
We discussed extensively to find a visual language that effectively portrayed the film's complexities and layers, inspired by various cinematic traditions.
