Running Gave Me My Job" — Sergio Mena on Winning Dallas, Cowtown & Life in DFW
Q: What was your mindset going into the Dallas Half Marathon where you eventually won?
I went in with a clear plan to race my own pace, stay patient behind the leaders early, and then push hard when I felt ready, believing I could win if I held form and stayed focused.
2:44 in His First Marathon at 24 — Nick Pencil's Wild Road to Boston
Q: All right, so you got into the training and when did you run your first marathon?
Nick ran his first marathon in September 2025, about a year after joining Train Pegasus, after initially planning for a Carmel Marathon that was canceled due to storms; he finished in about a 4-hour marathon with a strong sub-2:25 half, which helped him gauge his readiness for Boston.
2:44 in His First Marathon at 24 — Nick Pencil's Wild Road to Boston
Q: And you have a wild story. To me, it's wild. When did you start running, first of all? When did that happen?
Nick started running in fourth grade, discovered a talent for the sport during mini track meets, and continued through high school where his times improved significantly from the 19-minute five-kilometer to the mid-17s, before taking up marathon training years later with a local group.
Alan Schonborn — 10 Bostons, One Finish Line Window & a Mastiff Who Started It All
Q: What was your mindset going into your first Boston?
His focus was simply finishing and recognizing the enormity of the achievement, with emotion and pride marking the moment of crossing the finish line.
