Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why You Shouldn’t Mix 3 Genres (He Tried)
Q: What would you say is the biggest design challenge you've come across in this current iteration of the game?
The biggest challenge was balancing the desire to offer deep, strategic card-dungeon gameplay with accessible onboarding; I had to ensure players understand the deck-building and dungeon-exploration loop without overwhelming them, which informed iterative design choices throughout development.
Why You Shouldn’t Mix 3 Genres (He Tried)
Q: So you could just tell me a little bit about what did Lair Keeper start as and then the journey of whatever it has become today?
It started as a game jam project that evolved into a dungeon-building concept inspired by classics like Dungeon Keeper, but I shifted to a tighter, turn-based dungeon crawler with Slay the Spire-like card mechanics and then further refined it into the current Lair Keeper Draw and Brawl variant.
He Made One Million Check Boxes
Q: Do you plan to return to more traditional Steam-like games, or will you mostly stick to experimental projects?
I'd like to blend the two: take some wackier ideas and try to make them more sellable or realizable in a traditional format, while continuing to explore experimental concepts that push my own boundaries and keep the audience surprised.
He Made One Million Check Boxes
Q: What keeps you motivated to continue making these wacky projects instead of traditional games?
The joy of solving quirky problems and the social thrill of people actually interacting in unexpected ways online keeps me going. I also enjoy the challenge of making something that is both technically interesting and emotionally engaging for players, even if it isn't a traditional game.
He Made One Million Check Boxes
Q: How did you get started with these non-traditional games and decide to push into this space?
I started by taking ideas that could be built quickly and prototyped in playful, interactive ways. The feedback loop from collaborating with others, plus the Recurse Center environment, helped me see that people enjoyed experimenting with constraints and trying something bizarre yet engaging.
