Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Over a Glass: Stephen Leroux (Charles Heidsieck) - a legacy of wisdom shaped by time
Q: What makes Charles Heidsieck distinctive today, and how do reserve wines factor into that?
Leroux discusses authenticity as a baseline, the brand's generosity in communication, and the crucial role of reserve wines in shaping character and aging potential. He explains how high percentages of reserve wines (roughly 52-55%) underpin the depth and complexity of both Brut Reserve and Champagne Charlie, setting Charles apart from competitors.
Over a Glass: Stephen Leroux (Charles Heidsieck) - a legacy of wisdom shaped by time
Q: How did Charles Heidsieck come into your life, and what attracted you to lead the brand?
A headhunter approached Leroux in 2012 about leading Charles Heidsieck after the brand had been acquired by EPI. His leadership fit the needs for strategic direction, strong people management, and a focused distribution strategy, especially in new markets like Australia and the UK, driving a revival from a challenging period to growth.
Over a Glass: Stephen Leroux (Charles Heidsieck) - a legacy of wisdom shaped by time
Q: Tell me a little bit about where you grew up and how wine found its way into your life.
Leroux explains a blended heritage and a life shaped by Champagne's culture, with early exposure through family connections in the region and education in finance and business that later aligned with a leadership role in a wine house. His path shows how cross-disciplinary skills can translate into managing a global luxury wine brand.
Damien Brabender - Time, Space, movement
Q: How did you approach the sequence of adversity you faced over the past year?
I focused on breaking everything down into time, space and movement, turning big challenges into tasks I could schedule and complete step by step, and I kept reminding myself that this is happening and I need to act, not wish it away.
Over a Glass: Nick Buck (Te Mata Estate, Hawke’s Bay NZ) - some of New Zealand’s oldest vineyards
Q: How did you approach rebuilding Te Mata after taking over?
We launched a comprehensive reinvestment program across both vineyards and winery, redeveloped established plots, added new sites, introduced new clonal material, and rebuilt the whole receival, fermentation, and bottling processes to create a true estate capable of delivering consistently high-quality wines.
