  • Excellent podcast by people who care about civic liberties

I have a crush on IJ as an organization. I love these Beyond the Brief episodes because I get to hear from different IJ lawyers fighting for justice for regular people. I’ve learned a lot and have more hope than I have had in a while knowing IJ exists. Thank you!

  • Why are there pop sounds?

I like the content. Recently episodes have started including a pop or notification sound every now and then making the podcast unlistenable.

For a long time I thought it was my phone or I was imagining it. Would love to re-rate. Please fix this issue.

This occurs just after 3:28s on the October 24th episode as an example.

  • Great podcast and great organization

I absolutely love IJ. I met a Dr. in NC who has worked with them; and he told me they are top notch. These are important stories that need to be told. Keep up the great work!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

City Sinks Backyard Swim Lessons for Special Needs Kids
Q: How does this case fit into IJ's broader mission?
It sits at the intersection of property rights and economic liberty, illustrating how home-based businesses can be essential for families and communities, and showing IJ's commitment to challenging overbroad zoning that harms peaceful, lawful living.
City Sinks Backyard Swim Lessons for Special Needs Kids
Q: What's the legal argument for why the city can't shut her down?
The argument rests on equal protection and substantive due process: the city repeatedly approved her business, the outdoor lessons cause no disruption, and banning them outdoors upends her constitutional rights to use her private property and to earn an honest living.
City Sinks Backyard Swim Lessons for Special Needs Kids
Q: So Robert, tell us about IJ client Libby Souder.
Libby has spent decades teaching one-on-one swim lessons, serving kids with special needs, and she operated with city approval for seven years before the city reversed course and started enforcing a long-dormant rule to push her indoors.
Why is it ILLEGAL to Sell This Box?
Q: Why does Oklahoma have these laws, and what does IJ argue they accomplish?
IJ argues the laws are protectionist, not primarily about consumer safety, and that they drive up prices and limit consumer choice by protecting incumbents in the funeral industry.
Why is it ILLEGAL to Sell This Box?
Q: So Renée, who is IJ representing in our latest challenge to the Funeral Cartel?
IJ represents Candi and Todd, Oklahoma residents who sell customized caskets, challenging the requirement to have a funeral director's license to sell them.
