I have read Dante’s Divine Comedy about a half dozen times, but not until listening to Mark Vernon’s superb commentary about each of the Cantos of this masterpiece have I truly started to understand what it’s all about. The Comedy is not an easy classic to follow because of all the historical references that Dante makes, and it’s easy to get lost in the forest of references. This should be made more clear for any subscribers. A believer and admirer can still take a critical eye, which is entirely absent here. Dante is creating a narrative, and one in which he is blessed by God. Just because he says something, doesn’t make it true or honest. He’s an author and a person from the 1300s with frankly limited education and worldly scope, not a prophet or self-help guru.
