  • Wisdom and Humility in Action

I read Pat’s second book about why Christians should reject Trump and as a lifelong Lutheran and unapologetic liberal voter as well, Pat’s words resonated with my complete incredulity that people who claim Christ as their Savior could also champion a man and movement so antithetical to who God showed itself to be in the Biblical stories of Jesus’ life on Earth.

Next I found Pat’s podcast, and I have so enjoyed listening to Pat and his guests talk about our current political and cultural “rea... more

  • Thank you!

I appreciate your thoughtfulness and devotion to connecting God’s Word to current events. I have felt a bit homeless over the past 5 years, as someone who loves Jesus but does not align with the perspectives of so many in the US who claim Christian faith. Also, born in MN but raised in Europe. Appreciate the MN here.

  • Thanks for speaking out!

My faith has been extremely damaged by right wing political evangelicals and their so called “Christian”followers. It helps to know there are evangelicals like Pat that actually follow Christ and his teachings and recognize Trump is destroying our country!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rededicate 250: An Eyewitness Exposes the Theology Behind MAGA's Big Show (with Rick Pidcock)
Q: What did the worship experience feel like, and how did it relate to the messages spoken by speakers?
The worship atmosphere resembled a megachurch service outside, with contemporary songs and a strong patriotic and triumphal tone, interwoven with messages about freedom under God and a theology that equates political power with religious chosenness.
Rededicate 250: An Eyewitness Exposes the Theology Behind MAGA's Big Show (with Rick Pidcock)
Q: Tell us what Rededicate 250 is and what it aimed to accomplish.
The event was a government-sponsored worship gathering on the National Mall intended to reorient the nation toward a sense of being one nation under God, featuring a lineup of evangelical and other faith leaders with a pro-Trump political framing.
Trump Is Now America's Solomon. A Theologian Responds. (with Tihomir Kukolia)
Q: This looks like a very staged moment; what are your concerns about the potential outcome of the rededication event and who might endorse it?
The fear is that the event will be leveraged by influential Christian leaders and public figures to grant legitimacy to a political figure and movement, potentially normalizing authoritarian-style leadership as divinely sanctioned and widening the gap between supporters and critics while sidelining concerns about church-state boundaries.
Trump Is Now America's Solomon. A Theologian Responds. (with Tihomir Kukolia)
Q: But why don't you talk a little bit to the person who might think, what's wrong with any of this? Isn't it good if Trump reads the Bible?
The concern is that even if reading the Bible is good in itself, the context, timing, and framing of the event can conflate political power with sacred authority, thereby legitimizing a political project and Christian nationalism rather than encouraging genuine discernment or repentance.
Shiny Happy Predators: The Abuse MAGA Christianity Hides (with Amy Hawk)
Q: What does the broader media coverage (e.g., CNN, documentary) reveal about these movements, and how should outsiders interpret it?
The discussion points to how media coverage brings to light the systemic issues, while stressing the need to interpret such coverage through a lens that centers victims and presses for reform rather than sensationalism.
