  • Wisdom and Humility in Action

I read Pat’s second book about why Christians should reject Trump and as a lifelong Lutheran and unapologetic liberal voter as well, Pat’s words resonated with my complete incredulity that people who claim Christ as their Savior could also champion a man and movement so antithetical to who God showed itself to be in the Biblical stories of Jesus’ life on Earth.

Next I found Pat’s podcast, and I have so enjoyed listening to Pat and his guests talk about our current political and cultural “rea... more

  • Thank you!

I appreciate your thoughtfulness and devotion to connecting God’s Word to current events. I have felt a bit homeless over the past 5 years, as someone who loves Jesus but does not align with the perspectives of so many in the US who claim Christian faith. Also, born in MN but raised in Europe. Appreciate the MN here.

  • Thanks for speaking out!

My faith has been extremely damaged by right wing political evangelicals and their so called “Christian”followers. It helps to know there are evangelicals like Pat that actually follow Christ and his teachings and recognize Trump is destroying our country!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Shiny Happy Predators: The Abuse MAGA Christianity Hides (with Amy Hawk)
Q: What does the broader media coverage (e.g., CNN, documentary) reveal about these movements, and how should outsiders interpret it?
The discussion points to how media coverage brings to light the systemic issues, while stressing the need to interpret such coverage through a lens that centers victims and presses for reform rather than sensationalism.
Shiny Happy Predators: The Abuse MAGA Christianity Hides (with Amy Hawk)
Q: What are the core dynamics of these Gothard/Wilson-influenced groups that enable abuse, and how do they relate to the events you've mentioned?
She explains the umbrella/authority framework, the suppression of women's voices, and the normalization of abusive behavior as an acceptable cost of maintaining obedience and order within the movement.
Shiny Happy Predators: The Abuse MAGA Christianity Hides (with Amy Hawk)
Q: Amy, tell me what happened with the Duggars and why this is important to discuss now.
Amy outlines the public disclosures around the Duggar family, situating them within a broader pattern of authoritarian religious movements that prioritize appearances over accountability and reveal deeper issues of abuse and control.
Christian Nationalists See Trump as God's Righteous Avenger (with Matthew Taylor)
Q: But before we get into the movements in depth, talk to me in general about the spectrum of Christian nationalism and how the broader public often mislabels it as a single movement.
Christian nationalism is a spectrum with at least three dominant strands—Reconstructionist Calvinist, independent charismatic, and Catholic traditionalist—and their overlap and tensions explain why it is not a uniform movement but a collection of competing visions for power within American politics.
Christian Nationalists See Trump as God's Righteous Avenger (with Matthew Taylor)
Q: And so, what we're going to talk about right now, though, is Christian nationalism. What do you see when you see Pete Hegseth praying at the Pentagon and calling for violence, and what does that reveal about Christian nationalism today?
Hegseth represents a hardline, ritualized form of Christian nationalism that sacralizes the state, casts US military actions as righteous, and uses biblical narratives to legitimize violence in defense of a perceived divine mandate.
