  • Great discussions for all ICU team members!

I love this podcast! I am a first year I see you attending, and I have the privilege of working in a very busy hospital with surgical, medical, transplant, cardiology, and a new ICU. This podcast really reinforces concepts and cutting edge things in our field. the only gripe i have is that the volume levels are all over the place! Sometimes everything is super soft and I had to turn the volume up. Then the next sentence is blasting in my ear. I wish whoever their sound editor was was able to le... more

  • Best podcast on Critical Care related matters

I’m a critical care fellow in South Africa and am currently preparing for my final exam coming up in 4 months. I’ve only recently discovered this podcast after struggling through a few others.

I found Critical Matters easy to listen to, highly relevant and current. It feels like one of our Journal Clubs combined with an ISICEM-like feel to the high standard of expertise being shared.

    Thank you so much!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

PCT Reassessed
Q: What considerations should intensivists have regarding the application of procalcitonin in practice?
Procalcitonin should be used primarily for discontinuation of antibiotics, not for initial initiation, and protocols should be in place to guide its use.
PCT Reassessed
Q: What are the key findings from clinical trials regarding procalcitonin?
The most significant studies show that procalcitonin is effective in determining when to stop antibiotics, contributing to antibiotic stewardship and reducing unnecessary usage.
PCT Reassessed
Q: Why should intensivists care about procalcitonin?
Procalcitonin helps guide antibiotic use, particularly in knowing when to discontinue antibiotics in cases where an infection is suspected but not confirmed.
Peripheral vasopressors
Q: What pitfall should clinicians avoid when administering peripheral vasopressors?
One major pitfall is neglecting to monitor the IV site regularly, as it's crucial for preventing complications like extravasation.
Peripheral vasopressors
Q: What were the main findings from the Clover trial regarding peripheral vasopressor use?
The trial showed that 84% of patients received vasopressors peripherally, and there were no patient-level factors predicting this, highlighting institutional variation instead.
