Sianne Ngai on ugly thoughts, ugly feeling, aesthetic categories, gimmick in capitalism, and more
Q: What are you currently working on, and how does Ugly Thinking relate to your past work?
Ngai describes a project tentatively titled Ugly Thinking, focusing on the aesthetic and affective dimensions of dialectical thinking; it revisits negative thinking in a way that foregrounds the inseparability of thinking and feeling and connects dialectical method with aesthetic experience.
Sianne Ngai on ugly thoughts, ugly feeling, aesthetic categories, gimmick in capitalism, and more
Q: What do you see as the core connection between ugly feelings and capitalist sociality, and how does this relate to the concept of suspended agency?
The core idea is that ugly feelings express the lived experience of practical inertness under capitalism; by naming and analyzing these affects (envy, irritation, paranoia, disgust), one can reveal the inhibitory structures of capitalism and move toward understanding agency as collective rather than individual.
Kim Stanley Robinson on his work, utopic realism, the future of Mars, Fredric Jameson… and so on.
Q: What is the relationship between capitalism, science, and utopia in your work?
Capitalism and science are intertwined forces shaping history; science has the potential to be a utopian project that reduces suffering, but it must resist capture by capitalist logic. Utopian science fiction hosts visions of better systems while scrutinizing power, helping readers imagine alternatives and mobilize real-world change.
Kim Stanley Robinson on his work, utopic realism, the future of Mars, Fredric Jameson… and so on.
Q: Why Mars holds such allure for utopian thinking, and how do you balance it with real-world concerns about Earth?
Mars serves as a blank slate for experimenting with societally driven utopian experiments, yet it remains a mirror that reflects Earthly values and flaws. The danger lies in turning Mars into escapism; the real work is to apply the insights gained there to address the biosphere crisis and build sustainable futures on Earth.
Kim Stanley Robinson on his work, utopic realism, the future of Mars, Fredric Jameson… and so on.
Q: How do you conceptualize science fiction as a form of realism and as a predictor of future social dynamics?
Science fiction blends realism with imaginative projection, using detailed plausibility to evoke future possibilities while offering readers cognitive maps that help analyze and shape the present. It can both reflect and influence how we understand political and ecological risks, guiding action by making futures feel tangible.
