Healthy teams and agency with Pastor Beca Tobar
Q: What does true shared leadership look like in a church setting, and how do you ensure it includes both men and women equitably while maintaining effectiveness?
Shared leadership requires mutual submission, two-way accountability, and a culture of honoring each other's gifts. It involves practical structures like co-leading teams, rotating responsibilities, and ensuring there is always another leader alongside in major conversations. It also means quick apology and repair when missteps occur and building a culture where people can grow into leadership over time without fear of losing their place.
Healthy teams and agency with Pastor Beca Tobar
Q: From your experience, how has shared leadership worked at Holt Point in Australia, particularly with Pastor Warren, and what does that relationship look like in practice?
The leadership is collaborative and non-hierarchical in day-to-day practice. They meet as a three-person executive team, make decisions together, and divide preaching and leadership duties by gifting. They intentionally create space for both voices, with mutual respect and a shared vision, and emphasize courage to empower others to lead in their areas of strength.
Healthy teams and agency with Pastor Beca Tobar
Q: Now, Pastor Becca, you mentioned the woman who brought you up on stage and prophetically spoke that you would preach one day. Who are some other leaders who noticed your gifts and encouraged you, and what role models did you have during your ministry journey?
Her parents were foundational mentors and later key mentors in engaging with other seasoned leaders; she also benefited from mentorship by Naomi Beard and Pastor Ruth, who supported her development, emphasizing prayer, governance, and leadership alongside their spouses in a way that modeled women leading in church settings. Counseling helped her recognize her gifts beyond teaching, ultimately embracing leadership roles with confidence and grace.
