  • Comprehensive and Insightful

Finally a podcast for the longtime comic reader devoid of the lazy hipster criticism that seems to dominate the landscape The host puts the focus on the topic and/or creator, taking time to go for the comprehensive portrait within the context of comic history. As a lifelong comic fan and one time comic retailer, gems like this podcast really feel like coming home.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 1136: A Conversation with Ron Frenz: Creator Commentary on Thor: In Mortal Flesh
Q: What went into the cover design process for Thor 416 and the decision-making around color and layout?
I often did color directions and reductions, aiming for a bold, eye-catching result that echoed Kirby-era aesthetics while staying true to the story's mood, and the editor sometimes weighed in on elements like hammer size for clarity on the rack.
Episode 1136: A Conversation with Ron Frenz: Creator Commentary on Thor: In Mortal Flesh
Q: What was the remit around the New Warriors and their spin-off in Thor 411-412, and how did that come about?
Tom envisioned youth-oriented characters to broaden the readership and planned the team as a potential spin-off; Night Thrasher became the focal point, designed to anchor the group while we developed the team around existing characters.
Episode 1136: A Conversation with Ron Frenz: Creator Commentary on Thor: In Mortal Flesh
Q: When Tom DeFalco became Editor-in-Chief, did that change your working relationship or how you communicated with him?
It didn't really change our working relationship much; we were friends and the dynamic remained collaborative. He shifted to a more office-based role and was less travel-heavy, which made him more available to me.
Episode 1134: A Conversation with Judd Winick
Q: Is opening a book with a high-stakes action sequence and then flashing back to the beginning a conscious decision or just a preferred storytelling style?
Winick explains that it has become a conscious signature; he aims to hook readers fast with a mid-story scene and then reveal the setup, using the flashback as a storytelling device.
Episode 1130: A Conversation with Scott Hanna
Q: Can you share your thoughts on how the comic book industry has changed over the years in terms of creative partnerships?
Scott highlights the shift towards shorter stints on books and rotating creative teams, which has made it difficult to establish long-term relationships compared to earlier in his career.
