  • Conflicting feelings

I really enjoyed the first two episodes of the podcast, and found the tips on stress management at work really helpful in tricky times. However, the third episode with Michael Mosley was very disappointing, and I feel let down by the hosts. Mr Mosley's black-and-white demonisation of sugar, with regular comparisons to smoking, on the episode, is part of an unhealthy and unhelpful approach to food. Sugar, in appropriate quantities, is entirely safe for us as part of a healthy lifestyle and balanc... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Coffee and a Gas episode 25: Birth trauma and the anaesthetist
Q: Is there any evidence that a debrief 24 hours after an event with an anaesthetist might be beneficial?
There isn't solid published evidence cited in the discussion yet, but the speakers consider it plausible that a debrief could help by answering questions, addressing concerns, and providing support, especially after high-stakes emergencies.
Coffee and a Gas episode 23: Politics and the Association
Q: What represents a significant success for the Association in recent years?
successes include securing a webinar specifically for anaesthetists during the Leng Review process, facilitating governance and fatigue-related health research influence, and contributing to shaping healthcare policy through strong advocacy and targeted briefs.
Coffee and a Gas episode 23: Politics and the Association
Q: What are the current political aims of the Association, and how does it lobby for its members?
The Association does not pursue party political aims since it is a charity, but it advocates for anaesthesia and works to influence policy through meetings, briefings, and collaborations with MPs and other health bodies. The process includes producing manifestos, briefs, and responses to consultations, and engaging with policymakers across parties.
Coffee and a Gas episode 28: The elephant in the room: trauma, imposter syndrome and medicine
Q: What practical steps helped you manage responsibility and avoid being overwhelmed in on‑call situations?
Pause before agreeing to high‑risk tasks, assess whether you would know what to do if something went wrong, and don't hesitate to ask for support when needed. This approach protects both patient safety and your own professional development.
Coffee and a Gas episode 28: The elephant in the room: trauma, imposter syndrome and medicine
Q: What advice would you give trainees who carry trauma or imposter syndrome?
Talk openly about what happened and how it shaped you, because silence accumulates and isolation worsens the burden. Sharing narratives helps others understand and supports a culture where vulnerability is not weakness, which in turn can improve safety and compassion in clinical practice.
