  • Excellent Resource for a Civilian Supporter

During the Woolsey Fire, I was floored to learn that California firefighters were not outfitted with hydration packs. I participated in a fundraiser for CalFire and LAFD Foundation to secure them, but I hate to be one who provided in an emergency. Better then than not at all, but I set out to educate myself and maintain my education to support a community that has supported me for as far back as memory serves (Los Angeles West Bureau, Battalion 9 - Engines 23 and 69, especially!) It was then tha... more

  • Very helpful and informative

As a rookie volunteer firefighter that has been wanting to broaden my knowledge of the fire service I’ve been in search of various resources to help aide me. While there are many great firefighting podcasts out there this has been the most pertinent and informative I’ve found. Great work and thank you.

  • Short and informative

Love these short, very goal oriented podcasts. It’s a breath of fresh air. Some podcasts you have to listen to 50 mins of nonsense to get the ten minutes of good out of it! Great job, new subscriber here!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Searchable vs. Survivable with Sean Duffy
Q: What is one tangible change a firefighter can make to their size-up routine immediately?
Begin with practical prep before the fire arrives by masking up efficiently, listening to dispatch details, and actively painting a picture of the scene as you arrive, so you can quickly assess the best path for search and water application.
Searchable vs. Survivable with Sean Duffy
Q: What role does culture and training play in adopting a data-driven approach to search on the fire ground?
Culture and training are foundational; officers must foster trust, practice search mechanics, and align crew roles so that data-driven decisions become second nature, not a second-guessing after-action discussion.
Searchable vs. Survivable with Sean Duffy
Q: How do you distinguish between a searchable space and a survivable space, and why is this distinction critical for the first arriving officer?
The first officer should acknowledge that we're not God and cannot predict survival for every space; instead, we should search confidently but use available data, understand where the space is likely to be survivable, and prioritize actions that maximize chances of rescue while protecting crews.
Leadership from the Bottom Up with Dr. Candace Ashby
Q: Is it time to transfer or do they have another play?
They should find their happiness, consider promoting themselves to improve conditions, and not give up on their responsibility to their team.
Leadership from the Bottom Up with Dr. Candace Ashby
Q: How can firefighters be better at holding each other accountable without feeling like they're betraying the family?
It's crucial to govern our own behavior, recognizing that morale is an individual responsibility and not solely based on administration.
