I’m a rugby guy and I love the rugby detail. But the resonance for me is the insights from the guests on culture. Take out the word “rugby” and replace it with ‘business’ or ‘organisation’ and the impact is just as big. Folk like Mike Cron have lessons for all people who lead or aspire to lead any group. 10 out of 10; would highly recommend.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Joe Launchbury on Leadership, Culture & Accountability in Rugby
Q: Now, Joe, you have had a stellar career. And what we like to talk about here is culture. So how would you define culture from your experience of professional rugby?
Culture is the collective ability of the whole squad—players, coaches, and staff—to do what they say they will do, live by shared values, and embody behaviors consistently, especially through tough times.
Felipe Contepomi: When Your Greatest Strength Becomes Your Biggest Flaw
Q: How do you define culture in your teams?
Culture is defined by daily behavior and how people act in practice, not just by what is said; it grows when bad habits are replaced with good ones and evolves as the team develops.
Greg Cooper: Character will beat talent.
Q: What is one belief you have about culture that your peers might disagree with?
I don't expect to keep everyone happy; I prioritize consistent standards and ensure that even those not in the match-day 23 feel respected and informed, while still allowing for accountability and performance to drive selection.
Gordon Tietjens: I Coach Intensity Before Tactics
Q: What advice would you give a young coach?
Believe in what you're doing and never pretend to be someone you're not, focusing on being authentic in your coaching approach.
Gordon Tietjens: I Coach Intensity Before Tactics
Q: How do you maintain high standards in a coaching environment?
He maintains high standards by setting non-negotiable protocols related to fitness and nutrition, not willing to compromise on these aspects.
