Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Legal to Leadership: Becoming a Successful Biotech CEO with Heather Turner
Q: What fundamentally changes when you move from a senior executive role to the CEO seat?
Accountability becomes absolute and pervasive, spanning patients, employees, board members, and investors; the role becomes more solitary in the sense of bearing collective responsibility while guiding the organization's vision and benefits.
From Legal to Leadership: Becoming a Successful Biotech CEO with Heather Turner
Q: What lesson did you draw from your husband and board member seeing you as a potential CEO, and how did that shape your approach?
I learned that women often wait for perfect readiness; you can step up with less than 100% readiness, and trusted mentors can help you evaluate readiness and push you to take the leap sooner.
From Legal to Leadership: Becoming a Successful Biotech CEO with Heather Turner
Q: Heather, take us back to the moment you first realized you wanted to move beyond legal and operational roles into executive leadership. Was that your original ambition or did it evolve?
My initial goal was to be general counsel, but over time I naturally took on operating leadership roles and eventually decided to pursue the title that reflected the work I had already been doing, which led to becoming COO and later CEO.
Capital, Courage, and Clinical Execution: Lessons from a Biotech Founder-CEO with Paul Garofolo
Q: What lessons from fundraising would you share with future biotech founders?
Be prepared for substantial no's and long cycles; diversify financing approaches (equity, non-dilutive deals), and ensure you understand the regulatory data that regulators actually require, so you avoid chasing peripheral data that delays milestones.
Capital, Courage, and Clinical Execution: Lessons from a Biotech Founder-CEO with Paul Garofolo
Q: How did you decide to pick the acute urinary tract infection indication as a first clinical target?
The choice was driven by a mix of data cadence and therapeutic relevance, with E. coli being a well-understood target that could demonstrate platform validity, while enabling catheter-based delivery in the bladder to provide proof of concept.
