Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Luke Finch: AI progress is a ‘win win’ for HgCapital
Q: What are the areas Hg invests in and how does AI play into that?
He outlines focus areas like payroll, ERP, and regulatory software, plus tech-enabled services and B2B data, and discusses how AI tooling can be embedded into these core systems to boost productivity and data value.
Luke Finch: AI progress is a ‘win win’ for HgCapital
Q: Welcome, Luke. Could you start by introducing yourself and the HgCapital Trust?
Luke explains his role in HgCapital, the structure of HgTrust as the largest LP in Hg's buyout funds, and how the Trust invests in Hg's funds while aiming to realize value for investors.
Nick Train: Worse-ification is the route to mediocrity
Q: How concentrated will you go, and what would prompt you to add or sell holdings?
We believe in a highly concentrated portfolio of exceptional businesses; selling is difficult and often misjudged. We sell only when the original thesis no longer holds, or when the opportunity cost of staying in a position becomes too high relative to new ideas.
Nick Train: Worse-ification is the route to mediocrity
Q: What do you think about the wider software/data sector and the potential disruption from AI?
There is zero evidence of disruption to these business models in our universe so far; instead, AI should act as a tailwind, enhancing data-driven capabilities and accelerating growth for incumbents across the software/data space.
Nick Train: Worse-ification is the route to mediocrity
Q: What is your outlook for the near term? Are the headwinds likely to persist, and do you see some catalysts on the horizon?
We expect that if the underlying businesses can grow as forecast, their share prices should rise. A number of catalysts—such as takeovers and strategic shifts within major holdings—could signal turning points, but timing is uncertain and tied to broader market reactions to AI-driven growth and data assets.
