  • So fun!

I love this podcast! What a cool look behind the scenes of an amazing zoo. The only feedback I have is PLEASE try to figure out the sound mixing/microphone situation. Often it is hard to hear the guests so I have to turn the volume up, but then the laughing that follows about blows my ears out.

  • Love it!

I’m born and raised in cincy and still live here. I have 3 kids and we absolutely love our Cincinnati Zoo. We always have membership and live there during the spring and summer. And then of course for the Festival of Lights. I’m absolutely loving this podcast. Loving learning more about all the animals and hearing behind the scenes.

Jenna & Mark Take Questions from Listeners
Q: What does a typical day look like for you at the zoo?
A day blends routine and variability: morning to bring animals in, feeding, cleaning habitats, occasional medicines, and then a mix of tours, meetings, or PR work; the day is mostly behind-the-scenes with only a portion spent directly with animals.
Saving Species: Dr. Tori Kennedy & the 100th Red Panda
Q: How do you even go about that?
We start with cells, tag them with a fluorescent protein, use a lentivirus to deliver the genetic change, and then confirm the sequence with DNA sequencing to verify the modification.
Saving Species: Dr. Tori Kennedy & the 100th Red Panda
Q: Okay, my first question of many, how do you gene edit an embryo?
We use CRISPR-Cas9 as the well-known method to cut genes, but in this study we employed a lentiviral transfection to insert a genetic change and model placental issues, choosing a balance that lets the placenta still function enough to study the process.
Behind the Beak: African Penguin Chicks with Keeper Aimee
Q: What can listeners do to help penguins and conservation?
Support conservation organizations like Sanccob, buy sustainable seafood, shop locally and secondhand to reduce environmental impact, and participate in zoo tours or programs that fund conservation efforts.
Behind the Beak: African Penguin Chicks with Keeper Aimee
Q: How do you manage breeding and hand-raising for two chicks like Morgan and Jones?
We use a combination of incubation strategies, early dummy eggs to test parental behavior, and careful feeding schedules that transition from frequent hand-feeding to colony integration as the birds grow.
