  • Used To Be Great

I absolutely loved the pre-2025 Church for Chump‘s episodes. Something changed when Taylor came on and I don’t think it was for the better. I’m sure he’s a very nice brother in Christ, but there was such a good balance when it was just John and Thomas. Chemistry is not something you can create. It just kind of happens and I think there was really good chemistry when it was J and T. So for what it’s worth, from this lowly peasant I’d love to see the show return to its former greatness. Maybe Tayl... more

  • Listen Now, Don’t Wait for the Committee to Adjourn

Similarly to how Taylor feels about good music, I find Congregationalism to be “unintelligible noise”. So I did not wait for the 5-Star Committee to come to a decision before leaving a 5-Star review for this excellent podcast, and neither should you. If you wait for the Podcast Listening Committee to give you permission, you’ll be behind on all the good inside jokes. So just listen now. Your Elders would approve.

  • Great listen

Church History for Chumps is a lively dive into church history, with three hosts who blend wit and wisdom like pros. The token Congregationalist, holds his own, even if I suspect he’s mentally drafting meeting minutes mid-episode. The crew’s banter and insights make every era from Polycarp to Puritanism a blast. Great listen!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

110. At the Gates of the Crusades: The Fall of Rome
Q: Why is Rome considered so central to church history in this period?
Because the Bishop of Rome becomes the key unifying authority, preserving orthodoxy, and later anchoring political power as the empire fragments.
124. Andrew Fuller: The Heart of the Baptist Missionary Society
Q: Why should people be excited to learn about Andrew Fuller today?
Because Fuller represents a bridge between strict Calvinist roots and a broader evangelical mission-oriented view, showing how a pastor-scholars' work can influence global missions and sustained church life.
48. The Troubles: Religious (well, kinda religious) Turmoil in Northern Ireland
Q: Do you want me to give a very baseline kind of definition of what the Irish Troubles were and are?
Sure, yeah. Do you want me to give it?
48. The Troubles: Religious (well, kinda religious) Turmoil in Northern Ireland
Q: What got you started on this project? Were you a historian before, or was this something that has interested you a lot?
I'm kind of one of those weird situations where I really am not afraid to admit that I went into this podcast with nothing, but absolutely no knowledge.
59. King Charles I: The War Among Protestants
Q: Do you see Charles as a martyr?
Yes, in a sense, because he died partially for defending what he believed to be the true expression of the church.
