  • Great politics podcast

Great podcast that is a must listen for libertarians but also works for politics in general. Each event is balanced with speakers from across the political spectrum and debates are reasoned & cordial, unlike recent presidential debates. It does get a little highbrow at times (some as discusion on monetary policy), but one of the best political podcasts currently streaming.

  • Good to great content, mediocre to OK production values

Too many of their speakers don't know how to use a microphone. 1 in 5 don't use it for much of their speaking time.

  • Long, but Good

The debates cover a wide variety of excellent topics, and the conferences usually have a strong non-libertarian voice to provide a contrast to Cato's in-house opinion.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Compulsion in Speech: Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan and Beyond
Q: What reforms or reforms-like approaches do the scholars propose to reduce harm from blasphemy laws while maintaining respect for religious beliefs?
Adopt constitutional protections for freedom of religion and expression, encourage legal due process, promote education on engaging with differences, and support reformist Islamic scholarship that emphasizes tolerance and rights-based interpretations.
Compulsion in Speech: Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan and Beyond
Q: How does Ibn Taymiyyah's interpretation relate to today's blasphemy debates, and can these views be reconciled with modern concepts of citizenship and rights?
Ibn Taymiyyah's emphasis on punishment for insults was rooted in a specific historical and political context; modern discussions suggest separating theological beliefs from state-enforced penalties and emphasize protection of non-Muslims and dissenting voices under equal citizenship.
Compulsion in Speech: Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan and Beyond
Q: What drove the escalation of blasphemy prosecutions and mob violence in Pakistan since the 1980s?
Three linked factors—top-down Islamization policies, the sanctioning of blasphemy as sacred law, and the rapid social spread via mobile networks and social media—helped create an environment where accusations could trigger mob action and state inaction.
Summer of Our Discontent: The Age of Certainty and the Demise of Discourse
Q: How do you reconcile freedom with equality in a world where institutions increasingly take definitive stances on contested issues?
The guest suggests that institutional neutrality is still possible and, in many cases, beneficial, though institutions may evolve to allow diverse viewpoints while avoiding prescriptive, content-based censorship.
Should the United States Withdraw Troops from Germany?
Q: Does the actual process of withdrawal matter for deterrence and alliance cohesion?
Yes, most panelists agree that a managed, transparent, and coordinated process matters more for deterrence and alliance trust than a sudden unilateral move; ambiguity can empower adversaries and erode NATO solidarity.
