Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Seedy Sunday Seed Swap 2026
Q: What seeds are you hoping to find?
We talked about not having a strict plan, but looking for edible options and seeds that suit their local climate, with a focus on saving and growing varieties that perform well in their area.
Succession Planning Explained
Q: Keris asks about rhubarb and whether you must wait three years after moving it before harvesting.
The hosts explain that three years is a rough guideline to let the plant settle and rebuild its root system, but in the first year you can pick a small amount, in the second year a bit more, and by year three you can harvest quite a bit.
Glut Management Tactics
Q: Zoe asks what to do now to ensure a good harvest next year and when to buy and plant fruit trees and bushes.
Prune diseased or dead wood promptly, mulch to protect soil, prune judiciously (less can be more for some fruit trees), and buy bare-root stock now as nurseries prepare for autumn orders; aim for minimal interference with plant structure to maximize vigor.
Glut Management Tactics
Q: Jan asks about coriander, specifically how to keep leaves plentiful without it bolting to seed, and what varieties are slower to bolt.
Plant coriander in slightly shady spots to encourage leaf production, sow successionally every four to six weeks, and consider slower-bolting varieties like Slow Bolt or Santos, plus shade from kale can help keep leafiness longer.
Glut Management Tactics
Q: Louise asks when to harvest damsons that are being attacked by wasps or birds and how to balance letting them ripen with the risk of wildlife.
The recommendation is to pick when they're ripe enough for best flavor, sometimes picking a bit early to beat wildlife, and to save enough for jam if most fruits are being consumed by birds or wasps.
