  • In the wilderness?

I used to love this show and still re listen to multiple episodes. However it seems to have lost track, become much more repetitive and is lacking the voice and deep experience of Miles himself. I hope it can restore its former excellence.

  • Insightful lessons for any aspiring leader

Really interesting content in bite-size pieces. I’ve learned a lot about how to modulate and make little changes to become a stronger, more self-aware leader. Highly recommend.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Instinct to Intent: Communicating with Clarity
Q: What strategies help ensure understanding in real time during meetings?
Check for understanding in a way that's not awkward—clarify what's been agreed, what's not, and who owns what next. Use a concise recap and circulate a written takeaway to prevent ambiguity and reduce the need for people to raise their hands in uncomfortable ways.
From Instinct to Intent: Communicating with Clarity
Q: What role does context setting play in maintaining alignment during fast-moving work?
Context setting acts as a symmetry of information where leaders share what they know that others may not, bridging knowledge gaps and preventing misinterpretation. It's especially critical at the start of meetings and during crisis to keep everyone on the same page.
From Instinct to Intent: Communicating with Clarity
Q: How do you help leaders adjust their communication style so their message actually lands?
We advocate going to manual—slowing down to identify a single, clear message and then calibrating it for the audience. In ad hoc moments, leaders should set context up front, acknowledge stakeholders, and choose a channel that minimizes friction, while ensuring alignment with the broader goals.
The Board’s New Mandate: Enterprise-Wide Talent
Q: Eric, how has the board's role in talent management shifted over the last handful of years?
The board has broadened from focusing mainly on CEO succession to overseeing the wider leadership bench, with closer engagement to CHROs and a clear link between talent decisions and long-term strategy, turning talent into an enterprise priority rather than a episodic concern.
Seeing the Whole Field: Becoming An Enterprise Leader
Q: How should first-time leaders handle decision-making to balance speed with accountability in a matrix organization?
Differentiate between irreversible, big-picture decisions and reversible, field-level ones; empower others to decide on the latter while you retain accountability and context for the former.
