本書は、2018年に滋賀県で起きた、9年もの浪人生活を強いられた娘が実の母を殺害・遺棄した実在の事件を、記者による取材と被告となった娘の手記から解き明かしたノンフィクションです。
「母娘の共依存と支配」「教育虐待」「心理的な逃げ場のなさ」。傍目には逃げ出せるように見えても、当事者の心の中では「母を殺すか、自分が死ぬか」しか選択肢がないと感じるほど煮詰まった「牢獄」の闇について描かれています。

「本をテーマにした漫画」といえば、名著の素晴らしさを語り合ったり、読書の崇高さや楽しさをキラキラと描いたりするものが一般的。しかし本作は、古書店を舞台に「本を手放す人々」や、必ずしも本を読み通せない人々の姿を描き、本と人との関わりが決して綺麗な側面だけではないというリアリティを肯定してくれています。
