Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Who Prosecutes, Who Practises?
Q: Do you think the parliamentary scrutiny goes far enough to secure independence and accountability of the public prosecutor?
Parliamentary scrutiny is a step forward, but without a complete law covering the OPPA, transparent appointment processes, and enforceable standards of conduct, the independence and accountability safeguards remain incomplete and potentially symbolic.
Who Prosecutes, Who Practises?
Q: What do you think were the main flaws of the bill to separate the attorney general and the public prosecutor powers when it was first tabled back in February?
The main flaws lie in the lack of a detailed framework for the Office of the Public Prosecutor, insufficient independence from political influence in appointment and removal processes, and the absence of comprehensive codes of conduct and operating rules that would govern prosecutorial actions and independence.
AmInvestment: Brent Crude to Stay Elevated
Q: How long do you expect this elevated-price scenario to continue, and what are the key factors behind this assumption?
The scenario should persist due to unresolved supply dynamics and the time required for market normalization, with inventory movements, refinery and shipping bottlenecks, and geopolitical factors all contributing to a slower recovery.
AmInvestment: Brent Crude to Stay Elevated
Q: Good morning, Aimi. In your latest research note, you expect oil prices to remain higher for longer. Is this outlook driven by supply disruptions or weaker demand?
The outlook is primarily driven by a supply story, with demand softened but not enough to offset the supply disruptions, and the ceasefire narrative has slowed market normalization rather than completed it.
LRT3 Finally Launches .. After Numerous Delays
Q: Good morning Dr Dutt. OK, so the LRT3 Shah Alam Line has faced multiple delays since construction began back in 2017. What were the main reasons it took so long to reach completion?
The primary causes were the redesign from six-car to three-car train sets, which required significant changes to stations and rolling stock; the COVID-19 disruption which caused almost a year of pause; then contracted delays from civil and system contractors; and finally, deficiencies found during testing and commissioning that necessitated rectifications before opening.
