  • The ‘experts’

Why are you interviewing a British person on what’s going in Ukraine? Are there no Ukrainians you could have asked?

This is a bugbear of mine that in the anglosphere there is this belief that no one else can give an opinion other than someone else from the anglosphere and then a lot of context of the issue being discussed gets lost in this filter.

  • Latest episode on Iran!

This weeks episode on the straits of Hormuz and its closure makes for the most sobering listening possible! The fact that this analysis isn’t across the media worldwide just underlines how unprepared and myopic we have become! Horrendous times ahead

Thanks again Arthur for your analysis and guest choice

Another brilliant episode with the v impressive Charlie Gammell. If there is a word that’s the exact opposite of glib, Arthur Snell’s podcast would be it.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

THE SANCTUARY SCHOLARS Meet the displaced academics rewriting the future
Q: What is your understanding of how young people in Russia view the authorities under an authoritarian regime?
Nikita explains that many young Russians choose silence due to limited options, with a trend toward internal migration in thought and research as a form of dissociation from the regime, while acknowledging diverse and non-uniform views.
Back by popular demand: Charlie Gammell on the latest in Iran
Q: Would Iran pause or de-escalate if external pressure receded, and could a third party broker a ceasefire?
The guest suggests that a de-escalation path is possible but fraught: it would likely require concessions from the regime and could risk backlash from protesters and hardliners; substantial mediation would be needed, possibly from a political insider rather than a hardline faction.
South Yemen and the reshaping of the Middle East
Q: What would you say about this question in terms of what British people might do to engage with the issue of self-determination in South Yemen?
The UK could play a significant role in supporting self-determination in South Yemen due to historical ties, and it should engage based on the desires of the South rather than solely through a Saudi lens.
South Yemen and the reshaping of the Middle East
Q: Could you explain a little bit about how the situation of the Houthis affected South Yemen and its own aspirations for self-determination?
The Houthi situation has had both positive and negative effects for South Yemen; while it removed the prior regime, it also posed a threat by expanding southward, seeking to control regions rich in resources.
Cryptocurrency and Political Money Laundering - the threat to the UK with Neil Barnett
Q: How does the US National Security Strategy impact political interference in Europe?
It openly declares interference intentions, indicating that the US may attempt to manipulate European political landscapes, including the UK's.
