Innovations in Bone Healing & How Science is Shaping the Future of Regeneration
Q: Looking back to the early days of bone growth stimulation, what first sparked interest in exploring electrical and mechanical signals as therapeutic tools here?
The interest originated from the observation that bending bone generates electrical signals, which led to studying piezoelectric and streaming potentials and later ultrasound; this opened the possibility of signaling cells to enhance healing without drugs.
Dr. Bradley Lamm, DPM, Director of the Foot and Ankle Deformity Center and Director of the Foot and Ankle Deformity Correction Fellowship at the Paley Institute
Q: What are your predictions about biologics in orthopedics in the near and far term?
Biologics will remain central to advancing healing, including stem cells, bone grafts, PRP, and peptides, with multiple regenerative approaches becoming more proven and widely adopted, helping patients get back on their feet faster.
Dr. Bradley Lamm, DPM, Director of the Foot and Ankle Deformity Center and Director of the Foot and Ankle Deformity Correction Fellowship at the Paley Institute
Q: What are the top healthcare trends you're watching, especially regarding patient-specific repair and healing technologies?
Patient-specific repair and deformity corrections are at the forefront of disruptive technology, with calcium-binding implants that integrate with the body and faster healing methods. Minimally invasive techniques and advancements that speed recovery will continue to gain traction, enhancing functional outcomes for patients.
Dr. Bradley Lamm, DPM, Director of the Foot and Ankle Deformity Center and Director of the Foot and Ankle Deformity Correction Fellowship at the Paley Institute
Q: How do you see MedCad technology and patient-specific planning fitting into the broader trajectory of robotics, outpatient care, and value-based care in orthopedics?
MedCad cleanly integrates patient-specific planning with precise guides, implants, and reduction devices, reducing implant misusage and enabling more accurate corrections. This aligns with the push toward better outcomes, more confident patients, and smoother postoperative courses, while fitting into the move toward robotic-assisted and minimally invasive approaches in outpatient settings.
Dr. Bradley Lamm, DPM, Director of the Foot and Ankle Deformity Center and Director of the Foot and Ankle Deformity Correction Fellowship at the Paley Institute
Q: And so before we dive into our questions, could you introduce yourself and share more about your work and background?
I am Dr. Bradley Lamm, a foot and ankle surgeon in West Palm Beach, and I serve as Chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery at St. Mary's Medical Center's Palm Beach Children's Hospital. I also direct the Foot and Ankle Deformity Center and Fellowship at the Paley Orthopedic and Spine Institute, with over 25 years of experience and fellowships in club feet, AO trauma, limb deformity correction, and limb lengthening.
