  • Comforting

Very comforting to hear stories from other people with BDD. It really puts into perspective the shared experience we all have, no matter how different our individual stories are. Really great guests, who explain their stories really well. Please keep making more episodes! Would love episodes on certain aspects of BDD like the factors that sometimes lead to developing it. And would also love a recovery tips episode.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 40 Sheila Paul - recovery story
Q: What role did therapy and self-directed healing play in your journey?
Therapy provided grounding and understanding, while self-directed practices like mindfulness, nature, art, journaling, and prayer created sustainable routines that continued to serve me long after formal treatment.
Episode 40 Sheila Paul - recovery story
Q: How did you begin to break the cycle of torment and find a path toward healing?
A turning point came after a personal crisis when I turned to faith, sought purpose, and started using positive affirmations, mindfulness, and professional therapy; over years, these practices helped rewire my thinking and rebuild confidence.
Episode 40 Sheila Paul - recovery story
Q: You've observed that BDD is often misunderstood and overlooked in your community. Why do you think that is?
The distress in BDD isn't always visible, so others assume there's nothing wrong, and stigma plus fear of judgment and medication prevent people from seeking help; sharing lived experience helps others recognize it as a real condition.
Episode 39 Sam Milburn - parenting a child with body dysmorphic disorder
Q: What would you say to a parent just starting this journey?
Start with gathering reliable information to feel empowered, begin the referral process to CAMS, and use caregiver resources like the BDD Foundation handbook to guide conversations with healthcare providers.
Episode 38 Malise Honey - recovering from body dysmorphic disorder
Q: How did your BDD story begin and what were the early triggers?
Malise explains it started in high school with comments about her eyes, leading to a fixation and heavy makeup as a mask to leave the house.
