  • Real, Rural, & Relatable

Tune in if you love farming, or even if you’re just curious about it. Arlene & Caite keep the realities of farm life real, while not taking things too seriously. The combination of going “behind the scenes of farm life” and the relatable stories they share about parenting is refreshing.

  • Catie & Arlene have great chemistry together. The podcast has been a reliable and fun look at a slice of life unfamiliar to me as a city mouse. It's not about THEM but it's been fun to hear about their life and what farm life is like over the years. They have a crazy random selection of guests they talk to about a whole host of random topics. From potty training to fish farming. Great pod.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Part 2: Farming, Family, and Fostering: A Conversation with Dr. Erin Masur
Q: How does farming integrate with parenting traumatized children, and what role does routine play?
Farming provides a grounding routine that helps children build security, such as predictable feeding schedules and chores. It also teaches resilience when plans change (like unexpected challenges with livestock). The balance requires deliberate scheduling and patience to ensure both farm work and therapy/education needs are met.
Part 2: Farming, Family, and Fostering: A Conversation with Dr. Erin Masur
Q: What are the biggest challenges you faced after placement, and how did you overcome them?
The initial months were about stabilization, medical needs, and securing daycare and schooling. We relied on caseworkers as guardians and resources, tackled housing and transportation logistics, and leaned on community programs for occupational therapy and other services. Regular communication with mentors and colleagues also provided emotional support.
Part 2: Farming, Family, and Fostering: A Conversation with Dr. Erin Masur
Q: How did your adoption journey begin and what were the key steps in the process?
We started with fostering to adopt due to fertility challenges and then found that fostering could lead to adoption. The process involved classes, caseworkers, and navigating post-placement requirements, including medical care for the kids and school/daycare planning. It was supplemented by strong mentors and community support, which helped us manage the financial and emotional workload.
Drama Llamas, Socks and Shanks with Sam Haley
Q: How do you balance off-farm work, farm duties, and family life?
Sam describes a highly structured routine, reliable childcare, and a strong support network; she outlines daily schedules, therapy for mental health, and the importance of having backup people who can step in for barn tasks, kid pickups, and travel for work.
Drama Llamas, Socks and Shanks with Sam Haley
Q: What is your background and how did you get into llamas and blueberries?
Sam grew up on a low bush blueberry farm and pursued plant science and dairy-related work, eventually blending her farming background with fiber arts and llama husbandry after connecting with llamas who fit her interest in fiber, leading to Maple River Farm's diversified venture.
