  • BT is an asset to IR

This podcast provides a valuable service to Interventional Radiology. As someone who has practiced in a diversity of settings from premier academic, to private practice, to OBL. I feel that this podcast has valuable content for every practice setting.

You can listen to specific episodes on procedures you are developing and it will definitely help you get started and get better. Listening to episodes on procedures I am not involved in has also re-stimulated my curiosity and love for IR.

  • Episode 381 Anesthesia

Another outstanding episode and discussion about sedation and escalation to anesthesia. Collaboration with anesthesia and building their resources into your IR platform improves access and effectiveness. It’s more than an anesthesia machine. Getting their Omnicell and proper gas access into the room while formalizing escalation strategy has been effective at our institution. Bringing anesthesia in has drastically improved our patient experience and also has elevated our ability to do more advanc... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 645 GJ Tubes: Best Practices & Managing Complications with Dr. Kevin Wong
Q: When deciding whether to convert a GJ tube to a G-tube, who should be involved and what testing is done?
GI involvement is essential. The decision hinges on whether the stomach handles normal feeding; if outgrowing or healing occurs, GI may switch the patient back to a G-tube, sometimes using gastric emptying studies to guide decisions.
Ep. 645 GJ Tubes: Best Practices & Managing Complications with Dr. Kevin Wong
Q: Why do GJ tubes fall out or become dislodged, and what can be done to prevent this?
Dislodgement is often due to balloon failure, improper stoma sizing, or poor tube architecture. Prevention focuses on ensuring appropriate stoma size, using appropriate GJ branding, teaching caregivers balloon checks and proper up/down sizing, and considering tube relocation strategies when anatomy is unfavorable.
Ep. 641 Understanding BCLC Updates & Guidelines with Dr. Neil Mehta and Dr. Riad Salem
Q: What gives you pause when it becomes should we do it for a patient with HCC?
Key concerns include liver function, bilirubin trends, ascites, frailty, and transplant backup; the team strives to balance potential curative intent with risk of decompensation, often preferring a plan that keeps transplant as a viable option if needed.
Ep. 637 Navigating Healthcare & Surgery in Conflict Areas with Dr. Ahmad Hussain
Q: Would you do this again, and what advice would you give others interested in similar humanitarian work?
Absolutely. If possible, find an organization with a track record (e.g., GOTA, HEAL, GLIA) and be prepared for a long-term commitment; start with small trips if allowed, and focus on mentorship and knowledge transfer to sustain impact after departure.
Ep. 637 Navigating Healthcare & Surgery in Conflict Areas with Dr. Ahmad Hussain
Q: What were the biggest logistical and clinical challenges you faced there?
We faced destroyed infrastructure, limited imaging (no CT angiography, reliance on ultrasound), scarce anesthetic agents, and a hospital functioning as a refugee camp, which forced improvisation and close collaboration with local clinicians.
