あの絵に意味はあるのか、、、「ない」。無意識から溢れ出たものだからこそ価値がある。そう語られるポロックの画面は、しかし完全な偶然ではなく、本人が「コントロールしている」と明かす"意識との交差点"でもありました。空腹の限界で見た幻覚を描いたミロ、海を渡ってきたピカソの「ゲルニカ」。他者の影響を貪欲に吸い込んだ先に、30歳を前にしてようやく"ポロックらしさ"が滲み始めます。模倣を脱し、自分の様式が芽吹いた瞬間とは。そして次回、彼の人生を変える運命の出会いが待っています。
ニューヨークで美術学校に入学したポロックを待ち受けていたのは、父の死、うつ病、そしてアルコール依存の始まりだった。国家の景気対策として始まった芸術家支援制度に登録するも、タイムカードを切るために毎朝パジャマのままニューヨークを爆走する日々。納品した作品は国に拒否され、残りは焼却処分。天才と呼ばれた画家の、誰も知らない暗黒時代に迫る。
天才と呼ばれる男にも、何者でもなかった時代があった。兄の背中を追い「アーティストみたいなもの」になりたいと呟いた少年は、絵よりも彫刻に惹かれ、やがて学校の体制を批判する地下新聞を作って停学になる。世の中を唸らせる"あのポロック"はまだどこにもいない。しかし、その反骨心とアメリカ社会の激動が、静かに何かを育てていた。次回、ポロックはついにニューヨークへ。
絵の具を床に垂らすだけ、、、そんな"落書き"が、なぜ20世紀最大の芸術革命と呼ばれるのか。ヨーロッパの巨匠たちに追いつけ追い越せと奮闘したアメリカ美術界が、ついに生み出した異端の天才・ジャクソン・ポロック。「ピカソが全部やっちまった」と嘆きながらも、誰も見たことのない表現を生み出した男の、波乱の物語が始まります。
