批評家には絶賛されるのに、絵はまるで売れない。1940年代、栄光と困窮のはざまでジャクソン・ポロックは運命の女性と出会います。本名レオノールを捨て「リー」と名乗った女性画家、リー・クラスナー。互いの作品の意味を生涯ただの一度も尋ね合わなかった二人の奇妙な絆とは。「ピカソが全部やっちまった」「俺が自然だ」、影に怯え、孤独に叫ぶ天才の素顔に迫りながら、ついに現れる最大のパトロンと、初個展へと続く扉を予感させる回です。
あの絵に意味はあるのか、、、「ない」。無意識から溢れ出たものだからこそ価値がある。そう語られるポロックの画面は、しかし完全な偶然ではなく、本人が「コントロールしている」と明かす"意識との交差点"でもありました。空腹の限界で見た幻覚を描いたミロ、海を渡ってきたピカソの「ゲルニカ」。他者の影響を貪欲に吸い込んだ先に、30歳を前にしてようやく"ポロックらしさ"が滲み始めます。模倣を脱し、自分の様式が芽吹いた瞬間とは。そして次回、彼の人生を変える運命の出会いが待っています。
ニューヨークで美術学校に入学したポロックを待ち受けていたのは、父の死、うつ病、そしてアルコール依存の始まりだった。国家の景気対策として始まった芸術家支援制度に登録するも、タイムカードを切るために毎朝パジャマのままニューヨークを爆走する日々。納品した作品は国に拒否され、残りは焼却処分。天才と呼ばれた画家の、誰も知らない暗黒時代に迫る。
