Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E35: Dagmar Kratky
Q: What are the biggest unanswered questions in lipid metabolism?
Identifying which lipases and acyltransferases remain undiscovered, understanding sex-specific and circadian regulation of lipid metabolism, and figuring out how to optimize timing of eating with lipid metabolism to improve cardiovascular therapies.
E35: Dagmar Kratky
Q: So what first drew you to studying lipid metabolism and this field of research?
I began in Hermann Esterbauer's group, where exposure to lipid metabolism and oxidative stress sparked my interest, followed by doctoral work on endothelial lipases that shaped my niche in macrophages and atherosclerosis.
E16: Simon Pfisterer
Q: What are the biggest challenges in translating discovery into a company?
Navigating equity and royalties with the university, securing funding, establishing quality/regulatory processes, and building a team to bridge science with business development.
E30: Magdalena Daccord
Q: What motivated you to take on the role at FH Europe Foundation and what is your vision for the foundation?
Magdalena describes a strong advocacy instinct and the aim to close gaps in diagnosis and care across Europe, leveraging strong science and growing therapies to translate knowledge into practice across diverse health systems.
E24: Frederick Raal
Q: What are your thoughts on gene therapy and epigenetic approaches as a long-term solution for FH?
Gene therapy and gene editing hold promise as a once-and-done or long-acting strategy, potentially eliminating the need for lifelong daily therapies in some patients. Epigenetic approaches may offer a safer alternative with fewer long-term risks, but we need more data to understand long-term safety and effectiveness before widespread adoption.
