This podcast could be so good if the host were to actually listen to their guests. There is no rapport, no flowing conversation and the whole thing feels stiff and awkward. Such a shame as the guests are brilliantly knowledgeable in their fields and could be engaged so much more. I won’t be listening again.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Equine Colic 101
Q: What are some practical signs owners can monitor at home before the vet arrives?
Owners should observe behavior like rolling, pawing, flank watching, appetite changes, and temperature fluctuations; avoid excessive restraint or forcing movement on a thrashing horse, and share visual cues and vitals with the veterinarian on arrival.
Equine Colic 101
Q: When should a horse with colic be moved to a hospital for surgery?
If a horse remains painful despite medical management, requires ongoing intensive therapies, or has signs suggesting a surgical lesion, hospital transfer is advised because early intervention improves prognosis and reduces complications.
Equine Colic 101
Q: What are the most common types of colic and which are treated medically versus surgically?
Gas colic is the most common and often responds to anti-inflammatories and supportive care; other causes include obstructions, impactions, twists, or inflammatory processes. Surgical cases are typically those not resolving with medical management or with signs indicating compromised blood supply to the intestines.
Equine Colic 101
Q: Can you explain what the term colic actually means?
Colic is a generalized term for abdominal pain in horses with various possible causes, most often related to the gastrointestinal tract but can involve other abdominal structures; signs range from subtle changes in appetite and temperament to dramatic behaviors like rolling, and it requires veterinary evaluation to determine cause and treatment.
Keeping Horses Sound as They Age
Q: What age defines a senior horse and why?
There is no strict cutoff; aging is individual, and a horse's activity, genetics, and environment influence when they are considered senior, with owners often recognizing old age around 20-25 years in practice.
