  • Takes the time

Takes the time to really dig deep into the thinking and processes of guests—gentle pulls it out of’em. Nothing superficial here.

  • Love this podcast!!

This podcast is greattttt for people who want to learn about a diverse range of artists of today in all types of mediums. As a young artist myself I’m using it as a tool to get better at speaking about my own work or my meaning by listening to artists share their own version of that. Captivating, entertaining, and educational. This podcast is great.

  • Valuable show for artists

5 stars. This show is a great asset for artists. So many honest and important conversations. It’s hard and often demoralizing trying to be an artist and keeping the dream alive in a largely indifferent world and it’s good to hear these inspiring people discuss their experiences.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#76 with Margaret Curtis
Q: What advice would you give a young artist about themes and endurance in practice?
Focus on building a deep, sustained practice rather than chasing a single theme; hours in the studio, experimentation, and letting painting itself guide you are more important than a fixed, market-driven theme.
#76 with Margaret Curtis
Q: You spoke about the role of the figure and how you've moved away from it; do you miss having a central figure in your newer works?
I still see figurative elements, but the central figure isn't always foreground; the narrative now emerges through archetypes, constructed forms, and the relationships between elements, which still carry human weight without literal figure presence.
#76 with Margaret Curtis
Q: You mentioned that you start with a lot of imagery in sketchbooks and Photoshop collages; how do you decide which images become paintings?
I gather reference from a wide pool of decayed or historically charged imagery, but the selection is guided by what emotionally resonates and what can be transformed—ultimately the painting will reveal its own language rather than simply copying references.
#76 with Margaret Curtis
Q: So how does a painting start for you, what are the first moves - on or off the canvas?
I begin with a broad, largely gestural idea, then build a very transparent initial layer that acts as a guide. From there I respond to what the marks do, letting the process lead the way rather than forcing a rigid plan.
#75 with Catherine Haggarty
Q: How do you approach making a painting given your method with drawings, symbols, and forms?
You start with a core form or symbol and allow it to grow; drawings inform but never dictate, and you let the painting evolve through repeated play, reflection, and recalibration of the forms.
